We all face difficult and confusing times. My goal is to assist clients in a confidential and compassionate environment by providing therapy services in the home. My specialties include issues of aging, grief and bereavement, chronic illness, and life transitions. I spent many years working as a hospice social worker. It was a natural transition to have a practice that comes to the client', hopefully with dignity and humor. I have a passion for senior issues and learn from my clients daily.

Some of my specialties include depression, anxiety, trauma and abuse, chronic illness/pain, grief and loss, caregiver burnout, relationship issues, self-esteem and self-worth, overeating/weight issues, stress management, spiritual concerns, financial problems, and career counseling.
As a therapist, I seek to empower my clients with the knowledge that they hold the key to their well being and help them develop the skills they need to access this ability on a daily basis. My compassion, empathy, and love of people along with my own life journey is what compelled me to enter the field of counseling. My primary theoretical model is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), combined with faith-based counseling. My counseling philosophy is from a holistic point of view addressing the mental, physical, and spiritual aspects of a person. I also believe therapy must be tailored to the individual as no two people are the same.

Even if you're dealing with something long-term like a chronic illness, we can expand your capacity to cope and find joy in the midst of difficulty.
It is an honor to work with clients in their most vulnerable times, especially those struggling with eating disorders and women struggling with chronic illness, grief, life changes, divorce, and trauma (especially abuse and domestic violence). I can help you discover healing, strength and hope in whatever difficult circumstances you're in and have been through. So often, we are worried about taking care of others and feel guilty for taking care of ourselves... But you are worthy of this investment in yourself!

Healing begins with connection and acceptance. The things that happen to us may shape us, but they do not define who we are. My goal is to help you understand how your big and small traumas have impacted your choices to this point, and how to move forward into a healthier life. Many clients seek me out because they have experienced significant trauma that is impacting their daily lives. Others are experiencing anxiety, grief, spiritual issues, chronic illness, or life transitions. For couples and families, I seek to help them identify and alter the patterns in their relationships that are hindering connection and healing.

On paper, it seems that you have it altogether. Inside, you feel overwhelmed, stuck, ashamed, and afraid. Each day presents new challenges for accomplishing tasks you used to perform with ease. When you picture your future, you feel terrified and uncertain. You want to get back to enjoying life, but your efforts go unappreciated. You doubt yourself and wonder if you're the problem in relationships. You want a therapist who understands how to help you move forward with confidence. I am your person. I will help you become the CEO of your own life by trusting yourself again and changing repeated patterns that don't serve you.

Chronic Illness Therapists

How does therapy for chronic illness work?

Many people living with a chronic illness may feel they cannot speak honestly about their experience out of embarrassment or fear of being a burden, or because those close to them do not understand, for example, that they may “look good” even if they do not feel good. Therapy sessions are an opportunity to speak openly with someone who knows their symptoms are not in their head and who can offer practical, proven suggestions for managing feelings of grief, shame, or fatigue, such as techniques to challenge unhelpful thoughts about symptoms and develop new ways to respond to them, such as distraction or calming breathing practices.

Can therapy help with physical symptoms of chronic illness?

Yes, especially if an individual with chronic illness has developed depression. People with depression are less likely to maintain their health treatment regimens or to take positive steps to manage physical symptoms when they arise, thereby potentially complicating their medical prognosis. Treatment of depression, through talk therapy, medication, or both, will often improve one’s physical state as it eases the emotional burden of illness.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic illness?

No one living with a chronic illness, or their loved ones, should see depression as an unavoidable result of their condition. Instead, they should actively seek treatment. Research shows that people with depression are less likely to devote the required time and effort to maintaining or monitoring their health, and so therapy to limit the risk of depression can be vital for physical health as well. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness-based stress reduction have been found to help individuals reduce stress and anxiety.

How long does therapy for chronic illness take?

There is no set timeline for therapy for people living with chronic illnesses, but many will see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 weekly sessions. Some people feel that they experience progress faster than others but even some who quickly feel improvement may continue with sessions for months or years. Some people may benefit from maintenance therapy if their symptoms change or they experience a decline in physical health. Others find that the skills learned in short-term therapy can be used on an ongoing basis, even after therapy has concluded.
