I typically work with adults, young adults, and older teens (15-19). I often treat anxiety, including mild OCD, depression, trauma, inner critic/negative self-perception, perfectionism, ADHD/focus issues, and life-cycle transitions. I work well with clients who are willing to self-reflect and seeking change.

Therapy is most effective as a collaborative process in which your needs and desires for growth are prioritized. The foundation of my approach to therapy stems from the wholehearted belief that our bodyminds, those seemingly interminable knots of body and psyche, are orientated towards liberation. As much as we may desire freedom from those things that provoke suffering in our lives, we also desire the freedom to imagine new futures. I offer Psychotherapy via telehealth (over Zoom or phone) for anyone living in California and Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy in person at my office in Sebastopol, CA.

I have worked since 2005 with clients with depression, stress, men's issues, and other life challenges, primarily in community mental health with marginalized and underserved communities. I see people seeking support for many difficulties, including:imposter syndrome, self-esteem, boundaries, vulnerability, shame, communication skills, difficulty asking for help or saying "no," and more. Reducing self-judgment will help you to make better decisions that are aligned with your core values. This will ultimately free you from negative thoughts or worries so you are more fully available for all the important things in your life.

Are you a people-pleaser, overthinker and/or perfectionist, who is looking for a non-judgmental, transformative space to gain insights and self-awareness about why your inner critics are so loud? You may be feeling exhausted from putting yourself down and dismissing your own needs in the name of productivity, achievement, or avoiding rejection and mistakes. You have spent enough time being harsh on yourself. It's time to be kind to yourself. I specialize in anxiety, self esteem, grief, codependency, infertility, and racial identity. I can help you take action toward the life you want instead of getting stuck in your own mind.

Early life events lay a foundation from which we operate unconsciously. Acute or recurrent exposure to trauma may impact your ability to feel regulated and valid. Together, we can explore the narrative of your life and build insight as to how your lived experiences manifest in ways that are intrusive, unwanted, confusing, alienating, or helpful. Therapy is a space for you to explore your life without the fear of judgment, shame, or reservation. My approach to the therapeutic process is relational. Through an alliance that is therapeutic in nature, wellness can grow.

Over the past 10 years, I have specialized working with children ages birth to five years-old and their families as well as have worked with school-aged, youth, and individuals overcome trauma, anxiety, depression, behavior issues, family conflict, and parent-child mismatch/relational issues.
In childhood, our outside shapes the inside, and in adulthood the inside shapes the outside. -Chip Judd I believe that who we are today is shaped by the experiences and relationships we had growing up. Through relationships we can become aware of our own strengths as well as our brokenness from past hurts, hiccups, and hang ups and discover that a part of us yearns to be heard, revealed, and healed.

Relational Therapists

How does relational therapy work?

Relational therapy was developed by psychologist Jean Miller, whose ideas stressed that having strong connections with others encourages better health and well-being when compared with a lonely existence. Conversely, poor interpersonal relationships do not foster growth and learning. Relational therapy also encourages trust in others and patience with others, along with better communication and less conflict.

Is relational therapy evidence-based?

Relational therapy is not well-studied, and it may not be as effective in treating certain mental health conditions when compared with evidence-based treatments like cognitive behavioral or acceptance and commitment therapy. However, relational therapy uses techniques found in cognitive behavioral therapy as well as psychodynamic therapy, which are both well-studied with empirical research.

How long are people typically in relational therapy?

Clients may see improvement after a few weeks or months of therapy. Like cognitive behavioral therapy, relational therapy can reduce symptoms within 10 to 20 weeks, at 45 to 50 minutes once a week. But like any type of therapy, improvement depends on the person and the severity of the problem.

Does relational therapy work?

While no therapy type will work for everyone, some evidence suggests that this therapy can be effective. Relational therapy can help a person manage problematic relationships as well as the mental health conditions that accompany difficult relationships like depression or anxiety. This therapy type may offer benefits that are hard to measure but can be just as valuable—including feelings of higher self-worth or healthier connections with others.
