I named my practice "The Journey Home", because life sometimes leaves us with a heartfelt longing for home....that safe place within us that settles our mind and calms our fears. I offer help to women experiencing depression, anxiety, abuse, grief, personality disorders, emotional problems and mental illness. After raising three children who are now navigating independence and owning a specialty restaurant, life experiences and the desire to give back to the community offering emotional support to women and girls prompted a career change. As a Licensed Professional Counselor I am able to provide that support.

With my experience working with trauma, spiritual identity, and attachment difficulties, I utilize attachment-based therapies and principles of Internal Family Systems to help clients identify and move forward through their difficult seasons.
I am scheduling now for in-person clients in my conveniently located office in downtown Clemson, SC. In my clinical work, I aim to help clients regain functioning, perspective, and self-awareness in their lives as they move through concerns with life transitions, issues of spirituality, childhood trauma, anxiety, and depression. I also have special interest in working with perinatal mental health concerns as well as birth trauma.

Above all, I hope to create a safe space for those who need it. The stress of life, the changes we experience, and the things that happen to us, can make safe spaces difficult to access. No matter the age of the client or walk of life we come from, we each have unique value and the potential of moving towards healing and growth in the right conditions.

Are you struggling with what it means to be different in a world that seems to value conformity? Do you struggle with maintaining a healthy weight due to emotional eating? Are you paralyzed by fear of the unknown so much so that you avoid it at all costs? Do you sit down to accomplish something only to be derailed by thoughts of other more enticing activities or by the ping of your cell phone? Do memories of a traumatic even haunt your dreams and keep you frozen in fear? These are just a few of the problems I have helped clients overcome in my practice.

You’ve lost yourself. Somewhere along the way, whether during a toxic relationship or maybe with ongoing anxiety, you’ve become so different, you barely recognize the person you used to be. You used to be confident, independent, and capable. Now… you can scarcely imagine a life that’s not filled with doubt and the overwhelm of racing thoughts. At one point, you had joy and hope in your life, but now your life is unrecognizable due to the stress of it all. You want to take back control of your life! You want to find inner peace and find your voice. You’re tired of feeling like you’re treading water but not getting anywhere.

I have found it an honor to play a role in the lives of those who have entrusted me with the truth of their internal world and the unique experiences that shape and enrich their lives. I always am amazed as I hear stories of pain and obstacles and strengths from clients. While it is intense work at times, it is very rewarding for clients to encounter the experiences of the past and present with support in the "here and now". Helping those with a history of trauma, losses/grief and the after-effects like depression, anxiety, dissociation and addiction, and relationship issues is very meaningful to me. Healing is possible!

Your relationship is almost perfect, except for one piece. You’ve lost your spark, or maybe it was never there. Sex and intimacy is a crucial piece in relationships with trust and vulnerability being the paramount foundation. This typically takes a lot of open and safe communication, which also may not be you and your partner’s strong suit. Maybe there’s some old wounds there. Or shame around sex has always been a part of growing up. Whichever it may be, let’s light that fire that brings us closer together again. I am here to help you unlock the full benefits of pleasure within yourself and your relationships.

Sometimes, it's overwhelming trying to 'keep up' or 'fix' things on your own. Maybe you don't know exactly what you need, but you know you want to feel better. There may be things from your past that you have tried to move past, but they just keep creeping up again. I strive to come alongside individuals and families of all ages to help them overcome challenges, find meaning and joy in life, experience renewed strength, find true hope, and become mentally and emotionally healthy individuals. My core methods are evidence based and I keep a wholistic perspective- recognizing people as physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual beings.

Not accepting new clients
A guiding principle in working with any client is to see that person as a unique individual with strengths and potential far greater than the problem that has brought them to my door. My job is to tap into those strengths, to help you see your potential, and to support you in making the change you are seeking to achieve. I incorporate a holistic approach that looks at a client from a whole person, mind-body perspective, focusing on identifying relational, lifestyle, or cognitive changes that may be beneficial to reaching your identified goals.

Our childhood wounds don’t just go away. They shape the way our nervous system responds to stress, the way we seek connection, & the meaning we make of our experiences. Many people don’t even realize how much their past affects them, especially if they never suffered any horrific trauma. But let me tell you what you may notice instead. Your heart and mind races for no reason at all. You react defensively rather than responding calmly. You keep thinking about what you “should” do rather than what you NEED. You work so hard but still feel empty. It’s never enough.

I got into therapy so I could help people end the cycles detracting from their fullest potential in life. So many of us plug through the day with nasty negative thoughts about ourselves, leaving us drained of energy and an incapacity to be mindful and present with each other. Using EMDR, mindfulness, and a heavy dose of humanity and empathy, I help my clients obtain the changes they seek in order to be the best versions of themselves. My style is thoughtful, witty, intentional, and comfortable and I'm always happy to help those who are ready to help themselves grow!

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
