My hope is that whatever your reason for considering counseling, you know that there is a place you can come to be heard without judgement. If you have never seen a counselor or are looking for a new counselor I know it can be intimidating and it takes courage to make the first appointment. I respect the relationships I build with clients and I value the story of everyone I meet. There is a lot going on in our world right now. We can work together to create a plan of care that fits your individual concerns.

Concerned about your relationship with self and others? I'd love to help! I work with individuals, couples, and families to create a therapeutic relationship that fosters healing and growth. From an attachment-based theory, I believe that although much pain can enter our lives through our relationships and circumstances, relationships are also the conduit of healing. I believe that in our pursuit of health and wellbeing, it is necessary to combine evidence-based clinical care with empathetic support to help clients achieve their therapeutic goals.

In addition, I integrate motivational interviewing (MI), polyvagal theory, narrative therapy, psychodynamic theories, attachment-based therapy, and strength-based therapy modalities.
I am a licensed therapist practicing in Maryland, DC, and South Carolina. I approach my practice through a lens of anti-oppression, feminist, and queer theory. Recognizing the healing potential of the therapeutic relationship, I emphasize client-centered therapy that values and honors all aspects of my clients' identities. I continuously strive to address my power and privilege, serving as an ally to BIPOC, disabled individuals, sex workers, those living in poverty, fat/larger bodied individuals, immigrants, houseless individuals, the aging population, individuals under the age of 18, and those who are or have been incarcerated.

I take a trauma informed approach that draws on attachment-based and emotionally focused interventions to support my clients in gaining self-awareness and addressing the root causes of their concerns.
Relationships are hard and they are what make us human. I am passionate about helping my clients improve communication, increase connection, and work through past and present experiences that are preventing them from having and maintaining the relationships they want in their lives.

Everyone of us has a story that is filled with beauty and hurt. How do we hold the hope and pain of our own lives? How do we navigate the distress, desire, ambivalence that lives in us and in our relationships? How can we lead our anxiety rather than it leading us? How can we engage emotions in ways that bring healing and foster connection with self and others? It's my desire to join clients in understanding their own story - past, present, and future - to identify the places in which hope has been shattered, how it has been sought, and consider the way of restoration.

Anxiety and grief have a way of showing up in our lives no matter how much we try to control or ignore them. These strong emotions can show up as uncontrollable worry, overthinking, self-doubt, self-criticism, avoidance of others, social withdrawal, relationship conflict, and/or irritability. Navigating daily life can get overwhelming and you may be struggling to understand why things feel so different for you recently. Your feelings may be exacerbated by past trauma, recent loss, relationship conflict, or not having a supportive community.

When people are looking for a therapist, it’s usually because they’re hurting or their relationships are struggling. I understand your pain. I’ve been there! And because I’ve been there… I can show you the way out. I’ll be your guide to building your way to a healthy, happy life, and strong relationships. I am not a passive, “sounding board” kind of therapist. We'll do active work in session, I'll recommend reading material, give you homework assignments. I work with individuals and relationships. I'm the author of "Cultivating Connection: A practical guide for personal and relationship growth in ethical non-monogamy."

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
