I offer diagnostic assessment services for persons of all ages, with an emphasis on developmental disorders such as autism spectrum disorder, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, and learning disorders. I also offer empirically supported cognitive behavioral therapies (CBT) for a variety of psychological difficulties. For adult clients I offer prolonged exposure therapy for PTSD and CBT for pain management. For children and youth I offer CBT for a wide range of mental health and behavioral problems.

I believe that therapy can be fun, focused, serious, or emotional, depending on your needs and emotional state in the moment. I am a friendly therapist with a knack for making people feel comfortable and supported, balancing sincerity with humor. Counseling Associates of the Flint Hills, LLC provides mental health/ behavioral health counseling. Counseling Associates was started in 2011 by two therapists. There are now three locations, 221 W Main, Council Grove, KS, 1420 C of E Drive in Emporia, KS and 526 W. 6th, Junction City, KS with eight therapists participating. The therapists provide treatment for various issues, such as depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress, etc. In Emporia, there is an autism specialist. Services are provided both in office and in the home. Evening and weekend appointments are available.

Growing up in the Topeka area, Marta Howe, PhD. is basically a Midwesterner. I have worked in Manhattan, KS almost 30 years since she got her PhD in Psychology from Kansas University. I see individuals with numerous disorders including depression, anxiety and relationship issues as well as couple issues.

I treat people who suffer from panic disorders (and many other problems) with cognitive-behavioral therapy. I've studied 6 years of CBT at the Menninger Foundation and I have also studied at the Beck Institute in Philadelphia. Panic is basically a "false alarm". Panic happens when a person's body is producing powerful fight or flight chemicals at the wrong time. The body responds as if there is an emergency when there is no physical threat. The intense changes in heart rate and breathing etc. become subject to catastrophic misinterpretations, like "I'm dying" or "I'm losing control". These scary thoughts produce even more chemicals.
