My approach is collaborative and respectful, with the focus on assisting clients with utilizing the strengths they possess to problem solve and facilitate change for themselves.

Despite your best efforts, life is unknowable - you can't always predict or be prepared for what comes your way. You might need help sorting out what's going on. As a therapist, I have learned that we are not alone in our struggles. People hurt together, and we also must heal together. Through our relationships and experiences, we can grow and rediscover what we thought was once lost. I want to help you down that path of discovery while using psychotherapeutic approaches such as attachment theory, AEDP, IFS, interpersonal neurobiology (IPNB), Somatic Experiencing, and EMDR.

I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker working with children, adolescents and teens from the ages of 4-18. My specialties are grief and loss, anxiety, social skills, and depression. I use a variety of treatment modalities including: child-centered play therapy, sandtray, expressive arts, EMDR and yoga/mindfulness. In a blink of an eye, you're now a parent of a tween/teen(s). Your child has become w/drawn, negative, loss of interest & enjoyment of activities they once enjoyed. There's a change in their sleep, eating habits, doing poorly in school, isolating from friends and family, showing risky or harmful behaviors, even possible suicide thoughts. Your child shares with you that they feel depressed, anxious and don’t want to go to school. You try asking them what’s wrong, just to be yelled, “nothing, you wouldn’t even understand. You turn to your partner for support just to find yourself feeling angry, emotionally overwhelmed, invalidated.

Experiencing grief, trauma, or relationship challenges can hinder our ability to feel calm and clear-headed as we navigate our lives. Symptoms like anxiety, depression, reactivity, or codependency may have become familiar, creating obstacles to personal growth. Strained interactions? Feeling out of control? This distress can be overwhelming, discouraging, and utterly exhausting; processing these difficult experiences alone tends to exacerbate the problem. People seek my support to explore their past safely, gain insight, and heal; fostering their unique strengths and increasing their capacity for insight, transformation, and growth.

Art Therapy

How does art therapy work?

The process of making art allows people to express themselves. Art-making can take many forms, such as painting, collage, or sculpting. The therapist asks questions that the work elicits, such as how the person felt while creating their piece, or if any memories surfaced that they can discuss. The therapist will then work with the patient to process their experience, understand themselves better, and work toward change.

Does art therapy help with trauma?

Art therapy can be a valuable treatment option for those suffering from trauma. Traumatic experiences such as combat, rape, or childhood abuse can be so painful that articulating them can be too scary or painful; creating art allows people to express themselves without words, and tell their story in a different way. The physical nature of creating art can also help people feel rooted in the body, which may benefit those who feel disconnected from their body in the aftermath of trauma.

How long does art therapy last?

The duration of art therapy varies, but a common length for treatment is 10 to 15 weekly sessions. Some people may see improvement in just a few weeks, while others may choose to remain in therapy longer term. Patients should periodically discuss their goals with their therapist to make sure the two are aligned on process and progress.

What are the limitations of art therapy?

Art therapy is helpful for many people, but a limitation is that it doesn’t have as robust an evidence base as other forms of therapy, such as cognitive behavioral therapy or acceptance and commitment therapy. The evidence on art therapy is mixed; some research demonstrates its benefits, while other research suggests that it has little impact on patients.
