Perhaps you are feeling that something isn't right. You are confused, anxious, sad or you are just going through a rough transition. We can work together to identify and work through the problem. I use close empathetic listening to help you understand what is going on. Therapy begins when we can be attuned to ourselves and understand the past while changing our world to move forward.

What do you want right now? Are you searching for something that keeps slipping away? Are you feeling stuck, sad, anxious or scared? Psychotherapy can help you discover what you may not see about yourself and your behavior. In my practice I work with people who are seeking change, self-understanding and greater fulfillment in their lives. Psychotherapy can be instrumental to help you establish better relationships, process conflict and deal with questions of self-worth. With warmth and dedicated attention I strive to be respectful, open and curious. I create a space where people can explore their internal world and speak freely.

Prior to entering private practice, I worked for over 20 years in outpatient and inpatient mental health settings providing therapy to a diverse population. I specialize in working with the LGBTQIA+ community, and often work with clients on exploring their identity. In particular, working with clients who have experienced trauma, including sexual abuse, and how this intersects with the way they see themselves, and their overall sense of self-worth. I also have over 15 years experience working with those suffering from depression, anxiety and severe mental illness.

Other areas of experience & passion: anxiety, OCD, people-pleasers, communication skills (I’m trained in NVC), attachment theory, & using writing/art as part of healing from acute or long-term trauma.
Here’s what working together might look like: We take time to build comfort with each other so that you can share vulnerably knowing you won't be judged. I'll offer empathy and encourage you to identify your physical sensations, emotions, and needs. I'll also ask where in your life you'd like to make changes. Our work together will be collaborative—you’ll drive & I’ll be an attentive, caring passenger who will ask questions and give honest feedback. In other words: sometimes I'll listen, nod, and beam empathy; and I'll also have a conversation with you to bring your thoughts beliefs, fears, hopes, and patterns to light.

I am accustomed to working with clients struggling to find their way through issues such as depression, anxiety, attachment, loss, bereavement, substance abuse, negative body image, self-injury, behavioral struggles, relationship strain, and kids facing issues at/with school.
Having worked in a variety of settings, including 15 years in wilderness therapy, I've found that there is something wonderfully inviting about working together in quiet outside spaces (or utilizing teletherapy in these times of Covid-19). Optimally I help clients utilize their individual strength, values and insight to help find a more peaceful state of mind and lifestyle. As human beings we are meant to build meaningful connections, and sadly there are an overwhelming number of deterrents to building those relationships with self, others, community, etc. We can and will tackle those difficulties together.

As a bilingual English/Spanish therapist with 30 years of experience I can help you with a variety of issues including but not limited to depression, anxiety, stress, anger management, family issues and more.
The prerequisite to true freedom is to decide that you do not want to suffer anymore. You must decide that you want to enjoy your life and that there is no reason for stress, inner pain, or fear. Every day we bear a burden that we should not be bearing. We fear that we are not good enough or that we will fail. We experience insecurity, anxiety, and self-consciousness. All of these things burden us tremendously and deplete our energy.

Though I specialize in working with couples and young adults, I thoroughly enjoy working with those of all demographics and backgrounds. Struggles within relationships, loss of control with substances, anxiety, depression, or a mixture of them all can leave us feeling alone and isolated, no matter the stage of life, and having an experienced therapist to offer guidance and support can make all the difference in our lives. Throughout my time as a clinician, I have supported clients in tackling mental roadblocks, implementing skills for their relationships, as well as listened with care to their stories.

I believe that people are the experts in their own lives and that we are wired to connect, adapt and grow. But life can be difficult to navigate. We all get stuck sometimes, or we imagine that our lives could be better but cannot seem to find the way on our own. The overarching goal of therapy is to reconnect with our own inner wisdom to experience real transformation and healing. It's a deep privilege for me to be part of that process. I use a holistic approach with a mix of evidence-based methods that are tailored to your individual needs.

Anxiety Therapists

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
