I also counsel individuals, and teens dealing with anxiety, academics, and low self-esteem.
Couples who begin to work with me are often arguing over trivial matters, wondering why gridlock is happening now when it never used to.The same issues keep coming up, and processing it only leaves you feeling exhausted and isolated. Nothing changes and the conflict involves pointing fingers, bringing up past wrongs, and tearing each other down. Money-related fights may add strain, perhaps alongside issues involving alcohol, pornography, or betrayal. Intimacy is lacking, leaving you both feeling unloved. What if you had the tools to fix your relationship? A playbook for the hard times but also a playbook to have way more good times?

I specialize in weight reduction, smoking cessation, phobias, insomnia and stress reduction.
In the past 18 years I have become quite adept at working with clients who have trauma histories. Trauma can be major or it can be minor. I find that all human beings have experienced some form of trauma in their lives and this trauma often contributes to our current challenges. I use a method called EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) with many of my clients. This is a physiological method that is both quick and effective. So whether you are suffering from depression, anxiety, addiction, ect. I can help you both rapidly and dramatically.

My education and training from Columbia University, paired with my experience working within school, therapeutic milieu, and shelter settings, have equipped me with the knowledge to successfully connect with a broad range of clients and clinical diagnoses, such as ADHD, anxiety, mood disorders, poor coping skills, and family of origin issues.
If you are on this page, it likely means you have tried a lot of things on your own before reaching out for help. How courageous of you to take this leap! Asking for help can be overwhelming and intimidating, but also a tremendous catalyst for growth. I see each client as a whole person, and not just as the issue or diagnosis they are challenged with. You will find me to be an empathetic, validating therapist who will help you find ways to get unstuck by challenge your limiting beliefs and behaviors with compassion. I work with children, adolescents, parents, families and adults. I feel honored to do this work with you.

I specialize in treating issues around spirituality, anxiety, depression, OCD, relationship issues including family and parenting challenges, and significant life transitions.
I'm Leah, a LCSW in the state of Connecticut and a LMSW in the state of New York. I understand how daunting it can be to enter counseling for the first time and want to set you at ease from our first meeting. I am all about meeting clients where they are and tend to allow conversation to flow organically. I often incorporate humor into sessions and believe in the power of connection, empathy, understanding and trust as essential elements to a therapeutic relationship. I strongly believe that my role as a therapist is to help my clients become empowered to bring about the meaningful change they are seeking in their own lives.

With my help, you can develop the skills necessary to: •Create change •Improve your relationships •Manage stress, depression and anxiety •Cope with loss, whether through death or divorce •Develop techniques to improve verbal and physical communication •Stregnthen your marriage and family dynamics •Open communications with your adolecent •Create change in family therapy.
Creating change is difficult and takes effort. A person cannot be happy and content with their relationships with others, without first being happy and content with themselves. By looking at yourself, where you have been, where you are now and how you use what you have been given, whether environmental or biological, you can understand the changes in your behavior that are necessary to function in this world at an optimal level. A level where you feel good about yourself and enjoy healthy, fulfilling relationships.

Not all big problems began big, and not all small problems remain small. There are many different reasons clients come to me for help, with the common goal of finding happiness, and living a life that feels fulfilled and peaceful. Whether it be an experience from the past that anchors you, a problem in the present that negatively affects important responsibilities such as family/relationships, career/education and overall well being, or worry of the future; everyone deserves to feel in control and empowered for their own lives. Together, we can convert negative thinking into positive/proactive thinking that generates change.

I have experience working with depression and mood disorders, anxiety, trauma, issues related to gender and sexuality, adjustment issues and life transitions.
Therapy is a personal journey and a "one size fits all" model does not apply. I take time to assess the goals and needs of each person to tailor an approach that is effective and comfortable for each individual. I utilize a collaborative approach to therapy with an understanding that both change and self-acceptance are necessary for positive outcomes. "Homework" may be provided if desired to aid in the therapeutic process and accelerate change and growth. In a supportive and accepting environment, I will help you reach your goals to be the best you and live authentically.

Anxiety Therapists

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
