As Black people, we are exhausted from the daily struggles of existing in spaces that could never understand our struggle.
The Trap House of Healing is an unapologetic urbanized practice for Black families to be seen, heard, and supported. The THoH was founded on the principles of building community by integrating Black culture, trap music, and holistic work to help heal those in need. Each therapist at the THoH is clinically trained as a marriage & family therapist, and therefore we take a unique approach in addressing the complex traumas of Black and Brown people/families, and those representing the LBGTQAI+ community... so if you're ready for a spine-tingling transformation, improved communication, and a happier, healthier life, then look no further.

As a licensed clinical psychologist of over 17 years, I have worked with thousands of high performers, especially black women and BIPOC, by helping them uncover hidden issues that get in the way of true work-life balance and the ability to enjoy the life they worked hard to build. I’ve found that high performers, particularly black women, have difficulty with selfcare and are exhausted emotionally, physically, and mentally. Work-life balance is both a mystery and a necessity, so much so that some say that it doesn’t exist. I beg to differ. I'm not an average therapist and my clients aren't average in their respective careers either.

As a Multiracial Woman of Color, I have a passion for working with members of marginalized communities, including BIPOC ( Black, Indigenous and People of Color). My method of therapy focuses on a personal approach that works best for each client’s personality and presenting issue. I find it a joy to help others find hope amid their pain and believe that healing happens within the context of relationships. I enjoy unraveling and getting to the root of the presenting issue. I strive to create a warm, authentic, non-judgmental environment that encourages clients to gain awareness of themselves.

I am a compassionate and dedicated person with a passion for helping people navigate life’s challenges and discover the path to positive emotions and self-love. I love working with individuals, guiding them on a journey to work through anxiety and self-doubt when setting boundaries, difficulties managing anger and heavy emotions during conflict, shutting down and avoiding difficult conversations and struggles to believe positive things about themselves. I want to provide a supportive and empathetic environment where clients can explore their stories and build resilience. I want you to be able to show up as your most authentic self.

Like you, my clients have been through traumatic things that happen in movies like being raped by their own parent, having it swept under the rug, and being seen as the black sheep of the family; being treated like dirt, bullied by their family, and left alone to fend for themselves; being cheated on and learning decades later the son or daughter they've raised isn't theirs biologically; witnessing the suicide, homicide, or brutal abuse of their loved ones while hiding and holding their breath under the bed or in the closet; and being refused opportunities and otherwise oppressed because of their race or who they choose to love.

My approach is seen through a cultural lens that validates and normalizes your lived experiences and humanity. I am here to be a conduit for your healing journey by recognizing the wear and tear societal pressures may inflict on your mind and body. My work centers Black & POC individuals, couples, and families who struggle to create harmonious relationships with themselves and others due to learned dysfunctional patterns and intergenerational trauma from systemic inequities (familial, cultural, and societal).

There was a time in life when asking for help was the hardest thing to do. To be honest, even as a professional counselor, asking for help is sometimes still hard. But it is easier to overcome. Depression and Anxiety is the most hidden illness among African American women today. Our culture teaches us that it is weak to ask for help and gaining a badge of honor means sacrificing your mental well being so that other can be happy. It's time to break the cycle and generational curse or mental illness in the BIPOC communities. It's time to seek help.

I assist those whose anxiety takes over at the worst possible moments. Say, at work, school, the grocery store, in the car, or home alone and nothing is working to calm down or make it stop. I walk along side those whose inner critic, insecurities, and low self-esteem has taken their life from them but can't pinpoint the cause or "why". I also work with those whose emotions are so overwhelming so they act out of character, overly people-please, fear rejection, and hide their true selves away. For those " black sheeps" struggling with imposter syndrome and becoming exhausted daily keeping up with the expectations and goals of others.

I specialize in working with those who have experienced various forms of trauma. Often trauma profoundly affects how we treat ourselves and others, and makes it difficult to feel at home in our bodies. In our work together we will explore how to reconnect with your body and foster a greater sense of choice in your life. I work to build healing relationships and hold spaces of care, growth, and deep rest for and with Q+BIPOC folks, particularly queer Black women, femmes, and mixed race people. I support those I work with in carving out spaces for freedom, joy, and choice while navigating multiple oppressive forces.

Black and African American Therapists

As an African American, why might I wish to see a therapist who is African American?

African American clients may seek out African American therapists for several reasons, foremost being a sense of cultural understanding and the possibility of shared experiences. Cultural sensitivity and context on the part of the therapist may make it easier to form a therapeutic alliance and to focus on the work of therapy without the need to explain or educate a therapist on cultural matters. It may also be empowering to work with a therapist who shares one’s racial or ethnic background. It is important to note that a therapist who demonstrates cultural sensitivity can be highly effective even if they do not share a client’s background or race.

Can clients benefit from working with a therapist who shares their race or ethnicity?

Yes, having a therapist who shares a client’s race or ethnicity is often valuable, especially if it fosters a strong therapeutic alliance between the two. While training, qualifications, and experience are always important, a strong alliance between client and therapist is a major contributor to therapeutic effectiveness. An alliance is likely to be strengthened with a therapist who has an understanding of a client’s background and perhaps also shared life experiences. It should be noted that many clients form a strong bond with their therapist regardless of their race or ethnicity. This is a personal decision, and it depends on the therapist, the client, and the connection between the two.

How might I inquire about a therapist’s experience working with African American clients?

Clients can ask therapists directly about their experience working with clients of diverse backgrounds, including with African American individuals. You may wish to inquire whether a therapist has undertaken training in cultural competence broadly, and how specifically they would ensure that their approach is sensitive to the needs of African American clients. Therapy involves honesty and trust, so it’s best for clients to share concerns about their therapist’s cultural competence at the outset. And a good clinician who is nonetheless not the right fit for you is often happy to make referrals based on the concerns you articulate.

Why is it important for a therapist to be culturally sensitive?

It’s important for a therapist to be culturally sensitive because everyone comes to therapy with a unique background and set of experiences. Being aware of culture and cultural differences between people is important for understanding clients, as is coming to therapy with an open mind, recognizing that the therapist doesn’t necessarily understand everything and that the client can help guide the way.

Who is included in Psychology Today's directory of Black therapists?

The directory of Black therapists includes therapists who have self-identified their ethnicity in their profiles. Psychology Today uses this information to assist clients in finding a therapist who can provide a cultural match. However, not all therapists choose to disclose their ethnicity in their profile, and they may not appear in search results for this reason. In situations where the number of therapists who have identified as Black is limited, the directory will also show therapists who have undergone specific multicultural training or have extensive experience working with clients from relevant cultural backgrounds.
