While I see all clients who would like support for their perinatal or parenting journey, I have special interest in clients experiencing: miscarriage, infant loss, disabilities (in themselves or their children), fostering, adoption, and non-traditional families.
I specialize in perinatal (pregnancy, birth, and postpartum) & parental mental health and have spent more than a decade serving families in the Champaign-Urbana area. I rely on honesty and authenticity in my work and believe that a strong, trusting therapeutic relationship is essential. Allow me to hold space for you as you navigate the growth of your family, starting wherever you are in the process. I create a warm and encouraging space to discuss the challenges, fears, grief, and joy of parenting, from pregnancy through postpartum, and beyond.

I work with anxiety, trauma, relationship problems, self-esteem, family-of-origin concerns, adoption, and more.
Has your life taken an unexpected detour? Maybe it's a chaotic relationship, unrelating anxiety or navigating difficult family dynamics. Whatever your struggles might be, fighting these battles on your own can be difficult, painful and sometimes overwhelming. However, there is an incredible amount of power in a strong therapeutic relationship where you can process life with someone who desires to fully understand you with a lens of compassion and empathy.

I've worked with both children and adults in my career, and specialize in trauma, adoption issues, and trauma-informed parenting.
Figuring out our feelings and then how to handle them can be so tricky sometimes. Many of us are also doing the hard work of unpacking our own trauma and stopping the cycle of generational trauma. We are all trying our best, and I'm honored to be with my clients as they navigate through it. You are not alone, and therapy offers a safe, comfortable space for you to let it all out, for you to feel heard, and for you to learn and grow.

Have you been hurt by a past church or religious experience? Has it knocked you off balance and led you to doubt your relationships with other people, with God, or even within yourself? If so, you are not alone. Most of us at some point have walked through various degrees of Spiritual Abuse ranging from mild, disorienting misuse of power to full-blown cult experiences. These toxic systems and Spiritual Abuse don't have to have the last word. There is hope for healing, integration, and attachment repair.

We do not have the power to change our past or the immediate world around us, but we can have the power to make changes and take control within ourselves. Our views and beliefs are greatly impacted by our experiences in life. I strive to help clients process these experiences, find meaning within them, and navigate current and future paths.

I believe that every story is important and deserves to be heard. Is your personal story feeling a bit heavy and weighing you down? Could you use some help understanding and coping with your story? Asking for help can feel so scary, but I promise to make the process as comfortable for you as I possibly can. Therapy is a team effort between the client and the therapist, but in my office, you as the client will always be in the driver's seat. I treat both children and adults and offer individual and family sessions.

Seeking help can often be scary and intimidating. It is important to find a therapist that is caring and compassionate. In my practice, I seek to provide a safe and comfortable space for individuals to share the most vulnerable parts of their lives. Life is full of difficult situations we are not always prepared to handle. Therapy can be a way to get the support and tools we need to better cope with things life throws our way.

Tradition has trained us to take care of others and be mindful of the feelings of others. We are seldom encouraged to focus on self preservation. Decisions made throughout our entire lives are often based on the expectations of others. We spend our time following the agenda placed in front of us. As time move forward, we question and eventually challenge the steps we've paved and why? It's never too late to recreate YOUR path, your life, your total peace and fulfillment. When we commit our time, we are committing our lives. Your life, your decisions. If you'd like I can assist you with your journey. Live life openly with no chains.

Does my adopted child need therapy?

Not every adopted child needs therapy. However, many can benefit from seeing an adoption-informed therapist, especially if they were victims of abuse or neglect, appear withdrawn or disconnected, have behavioral or developmental issues (which may or may not be related to their adoption), are struggling with feelings of grief or loss surrounding their birth parents, or find it difficult to establish an identity, a challenge that often becomes most apparent during adolescence.

When should adoptive parents seek therapy?

Prospective parents can benefit from therapy even before an adoption—for example, to voice worries and fears; to reconcile infertility struggles, if relevant; or simply to prepare themselves for parenthood. After the adoption, parents who are struggling to bond with their child; are unsure how to talk about adoption or related issues, such as race; or whose child is dealing with developmental, behavioral, or psychiatric concerns can address these and other issues with the help of an adoption-competent therapist.

Is family therapy appropriate for adoptive families?

Family therapy can be invaluable for strengthening the bond between adoptive parents and children, helping the latter feel more secure in their place in the family. Family therapy can also help adoptive families navigate complex communication issues—for example, parents who feel uncomfortable discussing race with their child, who in turn feels invalidated by their silence, or a child who has questions about his birth parents but avoids asking them out of fear of hurting his adoptive parents’ feelings.

What therapy is not appropriate for adoption issues?

A discredited therapy known as “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy” or “rebirthing therapy”) should not be used to treat adopted and foster children, though it was largely designed for this population. Attachment therapy involves restraining, coercing, and punishing the child in order for them to “release” negative emotions and attach to their new caregivers—techniques that are abusive and dangerous and have even proven fatal in some cases.
