I mostly work with adults and adolescents who struggle with addiction, depression, and anxiety.
What would it look for you to live a life that more closely aligns with your values and potential? Sometimes we find ourselves feeling stuck as we repeat the same self-defeating thoughts and behaviors. We try to cope with the inevitably uncomfortable feelings that come with being human, but our coping mechanisms just don't seem to work anymore. I want to help you identify those sticking points and cultivate new, healthier ways of coping. In short, I want to to help you feel more alive again.

I have experience helping adults and adolescents process depression, LGBT issues, spiritual abuse, trauma, addiction, and more.
Being a person in the world today is more challenging than it has ever been. Sometimes we carry habits and beliefs into adulthood that can make it even harder. As we go through life we develop skills and interpret information in ways that help us to survive and cope with our environment. It is the brain's way of protecting us and preventing future pain. None of us are broken, but we may be applying skills and information in the present that are no longer helpful or relevant. I believe that developing awareness and understanding of these core beliefs and instincts is the first step toward healing and creating lasting change.

I have 20+ years of professional experience working with older adolescents, adults and families in mental health, addiction/recovery and fitness and training.
As an intensively trained DBT therapist, I use a collaborative approach to help clients build A Life Worth Living. As a performance coach and certified personal trainer, I assist clients in integrating their health and fitness goals with their current lifestyle as well as helping them understand and manage the impact of their emotions on their fitness, health and day to day life. In teaching skills to both groups, I work together with clients to develop their own plan for overcoming the emotional and physical barriers currently challenging them and then how to create their path for moving forward and achieving their goals.

While I have trained in many therapeutic approaches, people with mood difficulties and addictions respond very positively to a humanistic/holistic approach.
Life transitions (personal and occupational) often result in challenges. Many of us become sad with grief and loss or face new challenges creating stress and anxiety. Effective management of conflictual feelings and stressers result in a healthier lifestyle for individuals and families. This stability has a positive impact on your productivity and well-being. My hope for each client is restoration of her/his highest level of functioning. With my skills, and experience I partner with clients to facilitate their goal- whether that may be symptom relief, behavioral changes, problem resolution or personal insight and understanding.

Client issues have included depression, anxiety, school difficulties, eating disorders, grief, chemical addiction, and sexual compulsivity.
Life transitions are challenging whether it is navigating high school, adjusting to a child growing up, or realizing you are not where you expected at this point in life. My experience has been with people who have turned to alcohol, drugs, food, sex, or self-injury to cope with various life events. Others have shut down in the form of depression or paralyzing anxiety. Essentially the ways of handling life’s stressors are no longer effective, and in these moments we need help. I enjoy working with people who have a desire to learn how to better navigate their transition.

Addiction Therapists

What is the best therapy for addiction?

Addiction treatment will be tailored to the individual. People seeking help for addiction—whether with a psychotherapist, in an outpatient clinic, or in a residential program—should expect to engage in multiple types of treatments, sometimes including medication. For anyone recovering from addiction, avoiding situations in which one has typically used a substance is essential, as is the support of close connections. Since substance use disorders tend to co-occur with underlying mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression, those must also be addressed as part of any recovery plan.

How long does therapy for addiction take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from addiction. Patients and their families should expect the work to last several months, if not longer. Residential treatment programs may be based on a stay of 30, 60, or 90 days, with continuing work after release, but only about 1 percent of people are treated in such facilities. Ceasing use is just the first step; therapy to help maintain abstinence and effect behavior change must follow. The process of recovery, neuroscience has shown, involves brain cells recovering the capacity to respond to natural sources of reward and restore control over the impulse to use. Another definition of recovery is restoring voluntary control over one’s substance use and retaking all of one’s previous responsibilities.

How effective is drug addiction treatment?

Substance use disorders are treatable and remission is achievable for many who seek recovery; by some estimates, more than three-quarters of people who become addicted to alcohol or drugs recover. But that success rarely occurs quickly or on a set timeline; relapse is not only common, but many therapists and clinicians view it as a normal part of the process—not always a sign that a person has returned to addiction, but a signal that their treatment should be adjusted to help them regain control. Overall, research suggests, five years after the end of substance use, one’s risk of relapse is no greater than that of others who had not faced addiction. Other experts believe that complete abstinence is not the only measure of recovery, and that, through effective treatment, many people can learn to control their use.

How can you get addiction treatment for someone?

The most important factor in recovery from addiction is widely understood to be an individual’s commitment to change. For that reason,“interventions” in which friends and family gather to urge or force someone to begin immediate treatment often backfire; even when such efforts do lead someone to begin treatment, they may be less likely to stay than those who are self-driven. Still, family members can play an important role in supporting an individual who seeks help and can take part in family therapy as one element of a loved one’s treatment.
