I began my career working in Addiction Recovery and spent the first 6 years gaining experience in both Outpatient and Residential treatment settings for both Addiction and Mental Illness.
We all go through life struggles, which we are not able to handle on our own. Therapy is a very helpful tool to get the help and guidance that you, your family or typical support network may not be able to provide. My job as a psychotherapist is to work collaboratively with clients to help you heal and grow. My approach is gentle and direct, and while I have confidence in my knowledge about therapy, I treat every client as an individual and learn from every person who works with me. My clients would say they trust my intuition, pay close attention, tell them the truth and empower them with ongoing effective strategies for healing.

Expert assessment & testing, individual & group psychotherapy, TheraFit, Sexual Health & Wellness, SHAW101, sex addiction recovery, partner recovery, drug/alcohol addiction recovery, chem/sex recovery, LGBTQI+ Affirmative Therapy, Internal Family Systems, and functional health & wellness for the recovering individual, partner/spouse, & family.
After battling addiction for many years, I discovered a new way to live through psychotherapy, the 12-steps, physical fitness, & spiritual practice. Ramtha said, "Your greatest accomplishment in life will be living through it." Today, living is my way of life. Today, I can look at myself in the mirror without shame, guilt, sadness, & self-hatred. I can appreciate my past & not run from it. I can form meaningful loving relationships with others because I have first learned how to love myself. I have learned how to overcome obstacles and cope with worry, anxiety, & depression. I have learned to enjoy every moment, good or bad...

You can heal from your addiction.
We all just want to feel comfortable in our own skin. We want to live our lives feeling inspired, happy, and purposeful. Somewhere along the way we may have sought out external things to achieve this goal: drugs, alcohol, relationships, jobs, social circles, money, status, etc. These things work for a little while…until they don’t. We finally get to a place where we realize we need help turning inward. We become willing to examine our trauma and core wounds and heal from what is in the way of us emerging into our fullest selves. This is where transformation begins.

I specialize in untangling the root cause of symptoms that create suffering to break free from patterns of addiction to behaviors, beliefs & substances we use to manage, escape, & soothe emotional distress.
I consider it a privilege to collaborate with courageous individuals who embark on the challenging and sometimes messy journey of discovering what keeps them stuck and struggling. This process allows us to make meaningful changes, break patterns of dissatisfaction and disconnection, open up to life with enthusiasm and enjoy the sense of connection and meaningfulness we all deserve. Often, our struggles are rooted in how we learned to survive and connect with others early in life. Because of this, healing often happens within relationships. Good therapy can provide such healing.

Do you feel like there are no words to describe how you feel inside? I agree, sometimes there just aren't. I draw on my personal experience with chronic illness, substance abuse and divorce to help others create a place where those overwhelming feelings can find a voice. Together we will develop the courage required to answer the tough questions in your life...honestly. "Why can't I stop?","Will this kill me?" or "How will I get over this?" I believe that confronting life with rigorous honesty can be scary as hell. But, I know it pays off big time.

Therapy provides the unique opportunity for you to adventure into and openly investigate your internal world. Emotional transformations can be akin to wading into the ocean or navigating a new trail in the forest. While these pursuits are exciting, they can also be intimidating, challenging, or frustrating at times. I view my role as your co-pilot; helping you to navigate what it is that brings you to therapy with the goal of unleashing your innate strengths and ability to overcome. I do so with a genuine curiosity and openness, integrating my training in mindfulness and Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy.

I help LDS/LDS adjacent individuals and couples work through issues relating to burnout, faith journeys, relationships, sexuality, and parenting. My clients are responsible people (maybe too responsible!) who are looking for relief and balance. I work with people who are exhausted by trying to figure out how to continue on with all of life's demands, but also make room to care for themselves and heal. The folks I work with want to find a way to live by their values while making changes that help life not feel like such a slog. I help clients experience themselves and their situations in a whole new way.

Addiction Therapists

What is the best therapy for addiction?

Addiction treatment will be tailored to the individual. People seeking help for addiction—whether with a psychotherapist, in an outpatient clinic, or in a residential program—should expect to engage in multiple types of treatments, sometimes including medication. For anyone recovering from addiction, avoiding situations in which one has typically used a substance is essential, as is the support of close connections. Since substance use disorders tend to co-occur with underlying mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression, those must also be addressed as part of any recovery plan.

How long does therapy for addiction take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from addiction. Patients and their families should expect the work to last several months, if not longer. Residential treatment programs may be based on a stay of 30, 60, or 90 days, with continuing work after release, but only about 1 percent of people are treated in such facilities. Ceasing use is just the first step; therapy to help maintain abstinence and effect behavior change must follow. The process of recovery, neuroscience has shown, involves brain cells recovering the capacity to respond to natural sources of reward and restore control over the impulse to use. Another definition of recovery is restoring voluntary control over one’s substance use and retaking all of one’s previous responsibilities.

How effective is drug addiction treatment?

Substance use disorders are treatable and remission is achievable for many who seek recovery; by some estimates, more than three-quarters of people who become addicted to alcohol or drugs recover. But that success rarely occurs quickly or on a set timeline; relapse is not only common, but many therapists and clinicians view it as a normal part of the process—not always a sign that a person has returned to addiction, but a signal that their treatment should be adjusted to help them regain control. Overall, research suggests, five years after the end of substance use, one’s risk of relapse is no greater than that of others who had not faced addiction. Other experts believe that complete abstinence is not the only measure of recovery, and that, through effective treatment, many people can learn to control their use.

How can you get addiction treatment for someone?

The most important factor in recovery from addiction is widely understood to be an individual’s commitment to change. For that reason,“interventions” in which friends and family gather to urge or force someone to begin immediate treatment often backfire; even when such efforts do lead someone to begin treatment, they may be less likely to stay than those who are self-driven. Still, family members can play an important role in supporting an individual who seeks help and can take part in family therapy as one element of a loved one’s treatment.
