I am a member of the Anxiety Disorders Association of America and have specialized in anxiety disorders for the last twenty years.
When the way you usually handle things is no longer working for you, it's time to look in to changing yourself. Change your thoughts and you really can change your world. Difficulties with others in your life as well as emotions you are struggling with can be looked at differently and lead to increased peace and happiness. Panic, Anxiety, Excessive Worry, Depression and Anger can all arise from thoughts that trigger your fight or flight response. Change your thinking and you can change how you feel and how you behave.

Common life challenges include grieving, life-transition issues, coping with trauma, anxiety, depression, parenting issues, coping with chronic pain, domestic abuse, adjusting to stressors, and relationship discord.
Engaging in therapy offers a safe and supportive environment leading to a journey of healing, self-discovery, and education regarding past and current life challenges. Complex emotions can leave you feeling isolated and overwhelmed. As you engage in therapy, these feelings of isolation and stress are likely to decrease as you realize you are not alone and there are active steps to feeling better. My therapeutic process provides genuine support, helpful coping skills, and an action plan.

Try as we might, sometimes happiness and contentment always seem just out of reach. Depression, anxiety and stress can make getting out of bed in the morning a daunting task. Troubles in your relationship or conflict in the family can make you feel helpless or overwhelmed. You don’t like yourself and never feel good enough at work or around certain people. Maybe you just can’t quite put your finger on exactly what is wrong, you just know you don’t want to hurt anymore.

I have experience working with children, individuals, couples and families in a wide range of concerns including depression, anxiety, mood disorders, parenting challenges, work stress, family and relationship issues and various life changes since 1997.
My approach tends to be cognitive behavioral in nature and I use distress tolerance techniques (DBT). I like to tailor my approach to an individual’s goals & particular needs. What that means is that I like to collaborate with a client to find active steps to take to better one’s quality of life. It is solution-focused, and brief in nature. I believe that self-care and mindfulness are essential tools for quality of life, yet we aren’t always taught how to do that for ourselves. My clients say that I am direct, yet compassionate, and that they feel validated & empowered to make changes in their lives.

Many of my clients struggle with relationships, life transitions, feelings of isolation, school demands, perfectionism, career decisions, parenting, body image, depression, anxiety, trauma, sexual orientation and suicidal ideation.
I believe that each one of us has a genuine need to feel valued and connected. I also believe that connection is the foundation in our lives. We all need to find our purpose and find a place where we can belong to something bigger than ourselves. Sometimes our inability to connect with others can leave us feeling empty, hopeless or insecure. It can cause us to isolate, tolerate unhealthy relationships, abuse substances or lose our direction. When we learn to build healthy connections and find our purpose, we are more likely to experience hope and fulfillment. I am a licensed clinical social worker with 30+ years of experience.

I specialize in working with anxiety, self-esteem, relationship issues, life transitions, and grief/loss.
People often seek therapy because something in their life is causing them pain and discomfort. I often work with individuals who "from the outside" look like they "have it all together," but on the inside, they feel like they are falling apart. When you permit yourself to ask for help to explore your feelings, thoughts, and behaviors, you create more room for yourself. You don't have to hold everything so tightly. My therapeutic approach is warm, active ( I won't just sit and stare at you), and collaborative (therapy requires work and personal responsibility).

Do you struggle with feelings of anxiety, depression, guilt or low self-esteem? Do you find yourself avoiding social engagements or so preoccupied with excessive worrying? Finding ways to navigate these difficult feelings can help you get back on track. I use a psychodynamic approach and CBT that focuses on uncovering patterns of behavior and ways of relating to ourselves and others that are often outside of our awareness. I also consider how our past impacts who we are today. Through acceptance and empathy, we will establish a trusting therapeutic relationship and work together toward your personal growth and self-discovery.

Anxiety Therapists

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
