In the Disney Movie, The Lion King, Rafiki the wise monkey says, “Oh yes, the past can hurt. But the way I see it, you can either run from it or learn from it.” Being an avid Harry Potter, Disney fan has taught me a lot of things in my life. I have been a therapist for over 10 + years. I specialize in all types of traumas (i.e. family or origins, bullying, chronic health, divorce, adjustment issues, life change, grief, to all types of abuse and harm), depression, addiction, and anxiety. I love working with adults, teens, and pre-teens from all cultures and continuums who are experiencing anxiety, depression, trauma, life transitions, and more.
I’ve worked as a social worker with individuals and families in Utah for many years, and I feel honored to have been invited into people’s stories to be a participant in their healing and growth. As we live our lives, we’re presented with unexpected situations that can be overwhelming. Difficulties come from conditions in our bodies, sometimes from our relationships, and sometimes from our life circumstances. My clinical training and professional experience, and my own life challenges have taught me to enjoy each individual as a uniquely incredible human with boundless potential to overcome adversity and thrive.

I have specific experience in helping with depression, anxiety, trauma (including betrayal trauma) and addictions.
Therapy is a sacred space almost unlike any other. Therapy can be hard, as change is for most of us. And yet, there is also laughter, comfort and support, collaboration, aha moments, ease and joy and definitely love and caring.

Whether you are experiencing relationship stress, depression & anxiety, or a mixture of different emotions due to life circumstances, I am here to meet you where you’re at and work alongside you to find a unique approach that fits your needs for healing/growth.
Tired, Sad, Hurting, Unheard, and Overwhelmed. These are just a few words that many people are feeling at this exact moment. The pain of any one of these words alone can be demoralizing by itself. As a person who has overcome my own mental health issues, I feel I bring an unmatched level of compassion, grace, and guanine care into every session. Let's work together to find you the peace, healing, and connection you unconditionally deserve. By no means will it be easy but as the saying goes "nothing worth doing is easy" and the time has come to recognize that you are worth the effort.

Therapy can be a great place to learn to unravel difficulties, learn new tools, and thrive no matter what life brings to the table. I help late teens and adults address various experiences such as grief and loss, depression, anxiety, faith transitions, and particularly the intersection of religious/spiritual and LGBTQ experiences. I am gay and LDS which grants me a unique perspective in this space. This helps remove barriers of fear and misunderstanding early so we can get down to the nitty gritty. Regardless of your life experiences, I honor all parts of you and want to help you get to a place of peace, wholeness, and flourishing.

Whether you’re experiencing anxiety and depression, relationship issues, compulsive behaviors, grief and loss, or a faith transition, I’m here to listen.
Searching for a therapist is overwhelming. You want to find someone who you can trust in what is likely one of the most confusing times in your life. After all, a deep part of you is feeling broken and alone in the world. Your mind won’t give you a moment’s rest. You feel unsafe in your own body and uncomfortable in your own skin. Your relationships are suffering—and with all this going on, you're now expected to choose a therapist.

Everyone struggles with some depression and anxiety.
Every marriage has problems because no one ever taught us how to communicate and handle conflict. Many couples like to avoid conflict altogether and the result is that problems don't get solved and hidden resentment drives people apart. I will teach you what you never learned in school about how to make your marriage a source of greater joy and less stress. I help people find their voice and learn how to share it in a loving way to solve problems. I help couples with a variety of things beyond communication like infidelity and addictions, including pornography.

Working with individuals experiencing anxiety and/or depression is my passion. I want to offer tools and coping skills to help live a fulfilling life despite the challenges that depression and anxiety bring. I have specifically noticed a rise in anxiety and depression amongst teens. I love helping this age group in giving them the best start at life possible, and assist them in building self-confidence and love for themselves as they go through this exciting stage of self-discovery. Helping women and young women discover their value and worth is the greatest reward in this life.

I bring hope, humor, and compassion into therapy with both individuals and couples. I believe deeply in our inherent strength and resilience as human beings. The thing I love most about being a therapist is having a front-row seat to witness people’s goodness, strength, and resilience in the face of adversity and challenges. I have experience treating trauma, anxiety, depression, relationship problems, faith transitions, and addiction. I believe that people are fundamentally good and worthy and that virtually all of our “dysfunctions” are a result of our adaptation to adverse/traumatic experiences.

I believe a huge factor for a healthy and meaningful life is connection: with others, with yourself, and with the values that matter most to you. I strive to create a supportive, compassionate atmosphere where you can foster and develop these connections. I particularly enjoy working with women’s issues, faith transitions, LGBTQIA+ wellness, body image issues, and depression and anxiety. I believe that "healing isn't about getting rid of the 'bad parts,' it's about learning to love and accept all of our parts" (Richard Schwartz).

Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
