My name is Matt and I love helping people change. I see my role as a therapist to be a partner walking along side you, assisting you towards the path you wish to take. In each session I will listen with great purpose and without judgment to understand all that you are. I have experienced many milestones, changed careers, and through my background in athletics and schooling have acquired skills to tackle different situations.

I enjoy working with clients of all ages, genders, orientations, and backgrounds as they navigate through the challenges of life. I believe that everyone's story is unique and that it needs to be told in a comfortable and safe place, free of judgement. Many of the clients I work with come to therapy feeling stuck, overwhelmed, vulnerable, afraid of making changes, and/or wondering how they will make it through the unexpected changes they are faced with. Some have experienced trauma. I help clients understand why they are suffering from certain symptoms as well as help them identify maladaptive thinking and coping skills.

As a therapist who solely works with women, I am keenly aware of the unique needs that evolve during each phase of our lives. I realize that as we encounter our own personal ups and downs that our emotions, family, work/finances, relationships, activities, and goals often feel the effects as well. Truly being listened to by another person is precious and often uncommon. When it happens, we feel its power through understanding and respect. Once this takes place, amazing things happen...authentic communication, freedom from negative thoughts, healing, contentment, courage, and strategies for growth.

I love the counseling that I do. For the last fifteen years I have been a witness to the courage, tenacity, and resiliency of my clients as they strive to improve their personal lives and relationships in their families. I am convinced that much of our life is determined by the lens that we choose to look through. I also believe counselors are most successful when they also have a healthy lifestyle and live the principles that they teach to their clients. I believe that when you meet me that you will find me to be grounded, healthy, and authentic.

Life can be beautiful, but it can also be difficult, stressful, and overwhelming. It can feel easy to lose sight of the person you want to be and reaching out for help when you are struggling is an act of courage. I find counseling an invitation to listen and provide support to what is going on in your heart, your mind, and your world. Together, we can reconnect you with what matters most in your life and help you find direction, meaning, and insight. Whatever you are experiencing or wherever you are in your life, we will work together towards healing. GO TEAM!

I utilize a straight-forward and honest approach to therapy and I am direct in identifying real-life solutions to the presenting issues. I am an experienced counselor and I am often able to connect with and form positive relationships with those who are resistant to counseling or skeptical of the counseling process. I have found humor to be quite productive in treatment and will implement it often. I have experience in treating issues such as (but not limited to): depression, anxiety, PTSD/trauma, ADHD, Schizophrenia, Bipolar Disorder, anger issues, parenting concerns, and marriage/couples issues.

A responsible social practitioner, I provide psychological care, and services using American Sign Language (ASL). I work with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds, including various populations that encompass sign language users. My interests center on developing tailored, specific psychotherapy applications that benefit the patients with hearing losses. Much of my work places an emphasis on the importance of "courageous will" to empower individuals to make choices that are useful and practical.

Drug Abuse Therapists

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
