These days, there seems more and more to be anxious about and hope can feel scarce. Between societal issues, racial trauma, the pressures of “adulting”, and navigating challenging relationships, we all need a safe space. Counseling can be that safe space. If you are ready to cultivate an improved quality of life, healthier relationships, or if you just need support dealing with life’s challenges, I’m here to journey with you. I’m passionate about hearing people’s stories and helping to create meaning. Additionally, if you are a counselor looking to develop professionally, I offer clinical supervision.

Individuals thrive toward their potential when their relationships are healthy and supportive. Being in healthy relationship is how we, as individuals and families, are sustained in the long term. Relationships that are healthy are consistent, have structure, are interdependent, and provide instruction that fosters individual and collective resiliency and progress. When relationships are in crisis, individuals must be guided toward identifying the behaviors and attitudes that bring on conflict. When this awareness is achieved, change is possible. Here, attention to individual and relationship needs is equally important in the therapeutic process.

Feelings of hopelessness, worthlessness, and helplessness often bring people into psychotherapy. I help children, adolescents, and adults individually or couples with emotional issues. These important issues present in our lives in many ways including relationship problems, feelings of anger, anxiety or depression that many times do not make sense or may feel that things may seem unchangeable. May be difficult to imagine that current circumstances in your life could ever be better. For example, difficulties with work or school performance, or you may simply feel stuck. I also help parents understand their child better.

I have over twenty years of experience working with survivors of childhood sexual abuse, rape, and sexual assault as well as survivors of domestic violence.
I view therapy as a collaborative process where you can tell your story, explore your feelings, increase insight, and build self-awareness. I see therapy as an opportunity for growth and reflection. Drawing on over two decades of experience my approach is sensitive, patient and accepting. I feel that my role is to be a compassionate guide and facilitator to help you learn about yourself. Therapy can be like sanctuary - a place where there are no distractions, where there is an opportunity to pay attention to what is important.

Sexual Abuse Therapists

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?

A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?

Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?

Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?

As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
