Our creative therapeutic interventions utilize movement, mindfulness, play, art, and a therapy dog-all there to meet kids and adolescents where they are.
I have extensive experience working with kids, adolescents, and families and use a strengths based approach to meet children where they are. You can show up now and be seen, known, and valued at our new office. As a former school counselor, I know that children have varying school experiences and show up with you to build community, partner with you, and to meet each child where they are. I am curious, not all knowing, and consider the impact of words and actions. Our creative therapeutic interventions to support and to increase self understanding for kids across developmental stages

I want to help you use the creative process during our therapy sessions to improve your sense of well-being and to freely and authentically express yourself. You do not have to have any artistic skills, you just need to be open to the possibility that the art-making process can help meaningfully guide you on your healing journey. My aim is to help you get in touch with your creativity, to cultivate more self-compassion, build resiliency, use mindfulness, reduce stress, gain insights and self-awareness, and to help you feel truly seen.

I am trained as both a counselor and an art therapist. I like to work with clients who have difficulty identifying or expressing their emotions. Art therapy is a way of working that helps you to express and experience thoughts and feelings when words fail. You do not need any artistic skill to do art therapy - just a willingness to explore with a sense of curiosity. I am certified in Internal Family Systems and integrate this approach into art and sandtray therapy.

I’m trained in multiple approaches, including psychodynamic, cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavioral, mindful awareness, and body-based therapies; play, art, and sand therapy; and brain-based therapies, including Brainspotting.
I’m the founder and director of The Center for Family Well-Being, where we aim -- through our groups, individual therapy, and classes -- to help kids, teens, adults, couples, and families fully realize their potential with confidence, understanding, and an open heart. We're a group of highly-trained holistic therapists who integrate Western psychotherapy with the wisdom of Eastern mindful awareness practice, as well as other mind-body healing methods, for greater awareness, connection, and well-being for our clients -- within themselves and with others in their lives.

My primary focus is working with children and adolescents who are struggling with family discord, parent separation and/or divorce. Since 1996 I have been working within the school system, consulting for an adolescent residential/outpatient therapeutic treatment facility and in private practice. I work with children, adolescents, and their families to improve their skills navigating through life's challenges, transitions, and daily stressors. I also assist people who are feeling depressed, sad, anxious, or dealing with general relationship concerns. Together we develop skills to increase self esteem and coping abilities to promote resilient individuals and more communicative families.

Art Therapy

How does art therapy work?

The process of making art allows people to express themselves. Art-making can take many forms, such as painting, collage, or sculpting. The therapist asks questions that the work elicits, such as how the person felt while creating their piece, or if any memories surfaced that they can discuss. The therapist will then work with the patient to process their experience, understand themselves better, and work toward change.

Does art therapy help with trauma?

Art therapy can be a valuable treatment option for those suffering from trauma. Traumatic experiences such as combat, rape, or childhood abuse can be so painful that articulating them can be too scary or painful; creating art allows people to express themselves without words, and tell their story in a different way. The physical nature of creating art can also help people feel rooted in the body, which may benefit those who feel disconnected from their body in the aftermath of trauma.

How long does art therapy last?

The duration of art therapy varies, but a common length for treatment is 10 to 15 weekly sessions. Some people may see improvement in just a few weeks, while others may choose to remain in therapy longer term. Patients should periodically discuss their goals with their therapist to make sure the two are aligned on process and progress.

What are the limitations of art therapy?

Art therapy is helpful for many people, but a limitation is that it doesn’t have as robust an evidence base as other forms of therapy, such as cognitive behavioral therapy or acceptance and commitment therapy. The evidence on art therapy is mixed; some research demonstrates its benefits, while other research suggests that it has little impact on patients.
