I have 20 years of expertise working with survivors of childhood sexual abuse, rape/sexual assault and domestic or family violence.
When people are considering therapy, often the hardest step is making a first phone call. I have deep respect for the process of choosing a therapist and value the steps one must undertake in order to find the perfect fit. My style of working is relational and psychodynamically informed and I believe that each therapeutic relationship is unique. This means that we will tailor your treatment to fit your needs and interests. The best outcomes are achieved when you feel comfortable with the person you are working with and together we will create a space that feels safe.

I have treated numerous people who have been abused ranging: from sexual abuse to childhood abandonment; often prompting depressions and self-esteem issues.
Sometimes it is a struggle to face thoughts and feelings that you are having. Various events have happened to us in our life that continue to haunt us causing harmful and troubling feelings. These troubling feelings can feel shameful and unforgiveable. It helps to have a safe environment to talk.

I have worked with issues including concerns of identity development, relationship issues, sexual orientation, life transitions, career concerns, sexual abuse, drug use, grief and loss, complex trauma, posttraumatic stress, and adjustment to medical illness.
Psychotherapy addresses the pain of feeling misunderstood and alone. My approach is to strive to help you feel heard and understood. I listen carefully, as the narratives you share may communicate both obvious and deeper meanings. I look for patterns in your life and offer insights I encourage you to refine, so that together we can make sense of your experiences. I attend to dynamics in your relationships to help you stop recreating problems from your past in the present. You need to feel safe enough to take risks in treatment, so I work to create a consistent and trustworthy environment.

People who come to me for therapy find a pragmatic clinician who responds actively and efficiently to urgent problems and symptoms, including anxiety, depression, and bereavement. I quickly identify and address how present day stressors are affecting my patients' relationships at work and at home. My admiration for people’s strength and resilience guides my work. I believe a good therapist should be a loyal ally, an advocate for a person’s best self, and a compassionate believer in human dignity and capacity for change. My style is warm. My personality is direct.

I help hardworking professionals who are struggling with past trauma to overcome their symptoms and improve their personal relationships. A traumatic experience takes many forms, including but not limited to: a move to a new country, a break-up, an abusive work environment, or a crime related trauma including domestic violence, sexual assault, and neglect. These traumatic experiences can feel like they're happening over and over even when you're not currently in them, leading to fear and lack of trust. You deserve better than that.

If you're like most of my clients – you are high functioning and externally successful, but when you slow down or try to relax, your nervous system kicks into high alert. So, you can’t stop. Your intimate relationships are draining and a struggle to maintain, but you can’t be alone either. You feel an emptiness and lack of fulfillment no matter how much you accomplish. You have tried coping on your own, but your triggers, as well as, your stress are getting worse. I get it. I believe that triggers are opportunities for healing and growth and that with putting in the work there is light at the end of the tunnel. Help is available.

Sometimes, even after we have achieved some of life’s major milestones, we can still wrestle with uncomfortable emotions; feelings of listlessness or the slight ache that something is missing. It may seem as if the world on the outside we have worked so hard to construct isn’t quite what it seems or brings us the happiness we hoped. The gap between what we feel and what we think we should feel can grow. We may experience feelings of self-doubt, shame, loneliness, and notice our relationships have begun to suffer. Where we once shined at work, feelings of boredom, impostor syndrome, or insecurity may plague us. Confusion sets in.

Sexual Abuse Therapists

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?

A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?

Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?

Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?

As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
