Often in my practice, Cognitive as well as Dialectical-Behavioral therapy (CBT and DBT), paired with mindfulness techniques are used to explore the ways in which thoughts affect feelings, which directly affects actions taken (or not taken).
I deeply believe in every individual's potential to grow, change, and solve problems. Using several approaches to tailor therapy to each client, we work together to achieve more self-compassion, awareness, and understanding. This team effort is applied to best cultivate the most effective and efficient ways to reach all goals.

I use mindfulness, CBT, DBT, motivational interviewing, and narrative counseling tools to help reach goals.
I approach counseling from a practical, client-centered approach. I believe in meeting people where they are at, setting attainable therapeutic goals, and fostering intentional self-exploration. My experience with clients focuses on changing behavioral patterns, dealing with interpersonal issues, exploring new coping skills, and addressing symptoms of depression and anxiety. I have worked facilitating group therapy for people diagnosed as HIV+, as well as individual counseling for LGBT+ people. I have a history of working with people experiencing substance use from both abstinence and harm reduction approaches.

Who am I? What am I doing with my life? Why am I having such a hard time? Many of my clients are searching for their place in the world and struggling with big and small questions alike. They might be exploring themselves and their spirituality, or they might be having trouble coping with anxiety or handling relationship issues. My belief is that all questions- large and small- are worth exploring thoughtfully. My goal is to help clients gain a deeper sense of insight and purpose while doing so.

Everyone has the potential to make life-affirming changes. However, many of us move through our lives relying on unhealthy coping mechanisms. Learning to pause and reframe our responses to difficult situations can create better outcomes, deeper relationships, and more life satisfaction. You bring a unique sense of self determination into the therapeutic space. Using a strengths-based perspective, we’ll build upon the gifts you already possess to bust through the patterns of thinking and behavior keeping you from accomplishing your goals.

I believe that we all struggle, at times, to cope with difficult feelings. You know, the ones that have been with us all our lives? The ones that make us feel stuck and hopeless at times? I also believe that we can make some sense out of our feelings by examining past relationships. With this awareness we can begin to look at your current feelings and relationships. In a non-judgmental environment, come as you are. We will approach this together.

In a world filled with so many stressors, everyone deserves a safe space to process and explore ways to feel better. Often times, it is people and situations that we encounter daily that cause us to feel sad or anxious, and having a supportive therapist to talk with can actually make life more meaningful and enjoyable.

How can we make deeper changes when we are trying to manage unusual pain, or are just handling our day-to-day suffering? When we feel safe and accepted as we are, we can challenge ourselves to grow, and to encounter others in an authentic way. I aim to create, with you, a safe place where we get to know your habitual patterns of behaving and relating, and explore less familiar sides of you that may offer surprising possibilities for thinking, feeling, relating and living. How can deepening awareness enliven, balance, support, un-stick, sustain or change your life? Let's find out!

I specialize in helping people through loss, traumatic events, and life transitions. You may be stuck, feel out of control, or simply want a different life. Psychotherapy can be helpful in redefining how you relate to others and yourself, and in identifying your needs and nurturing these areas. I can introduce research-supported strategies for coping with difficult emotions, stress, or physical pain when a practical solution is appropriate. An ideal patient would also value an emotion-based and interpersonal approach to treatment; few things can predict the success of treatment like the strong bond between your therapist and you.

In my many years of advanced study and clinical work I have developed a practical, solution-oriented approach to mental health treatment. I believe that no one treatment model or therapeutic approach works for everyone. My extensive experience and rigorous training have enabled me to integrate numerous approaches to tailor treatments to the needs of each client's unique experiences and circumstances. I blend numerous therapeutic models and approaches- or stick to just one- depending on the person I am working with and the goals they have for our work together.

We all get stuck from time to time, but I feel it's important to remember that the way you feel right now is not how you have to be tomorrow. I believe therapy is primarily a change in perspective. It allows us to gain a new viewpoint of the problem that has us feeling stuck. I believe this new perspective can arise when we truly feel understood. Having an impartial witness listen to our story with attention, concern and care can lay the foundation for change.

Online Therapists

Is online therapy as effective as in-person?

Numerous studies suggest that online therapy can be as effective as in-person therapy. However, further research is needed to determine if online therapy provides the same benefits across all client populations. Individuals with severe mental illnesses, such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, or those who may benefit from in-person check-ins, like those with eating disorders, may not experience the same level of benefit from online therapy. Nonetheless, the success of online therapy, much like in-person therapy, often hinges on the quality of the therapeutic relationship between the therapist and the client rather than the specific modality of therapy used.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of therapy conducted online?

One of the main advantages of online therapy is its convenience for both clients and therapists. It also allows clients who require specialized therapy to access a wider range of professionals than they could with only in-person sessions. Additionally, online therapy may be a more affordable option in some cases and often offers the same insurance benefits as in-person therapy. However, online therapy may not be suitable for everyone, especially those who value face-to-face interaction with a therapist. Therapists may find it more challenging to assess clients accurately in an online setting due to reduced nonverbal cues on camera. There is also the increased risk that disruptions caused by external factors, such as technology malfunctions, can hinder the therapy session. For these reasons, many therapists offer a "hybrid" therapeutic approach, alternating between seeing clients in-person and online.

Is online therapy suitable for children and adolescents?

Just like with adults, the accessibility and convenience of online therapy can greatly benefit children and adolescents. In fact, children and adolescents may be more accustomed to navigating online platforms than older adults, making online sessions feel more natural for them. Teens might also be interested in using additional online tools, such as therapist-recommended apps, as an adjunct to online therapy sessions. Apps for developing CBT skills, practicing mindfulness exercises, or tracking thoughts and moods can be helpful for teens receiving therapy. However, it's important to note that not all therapeutic modalities are well-suited to online therapy, especially those used with younger children. For example, play therapy, which helps younger children express their emotions, often requires in-person sessions to be fully effective.

Can I receive prescriptions and medication management with online therapy?

The ability for psychiatrists to prescribe medications through online therapy varies based on the medication and the states where the medical professional and client are located. While many prescribing regulations were relaxed during the COVID-19 pandemic, some states still enforce rules, especially concerning controlled substances, which may mandate an in-person visit before prescribing. Generally, however, medical professionals can prescribe non-controlled substances through online therapy sessions just as they do during in-person sessions.
