I believe in all people’s innate capacity to heal. To me, all symptoms that we experience whether it be chronic pain, anxiety, depression, panic attacks, etc can be explained by trauma. Trauma does not have to be big events. Trauma can be if we are not attuned to emotionally as children or if our parents have their own unprocessed trauma—this sort of trauma often leads to deep seeded beliefs that we are unloveable and bad. Our healing comes from teaching our parts that we are loveable and accepted just as we are.

Research based modalities include cbt, ipt, dbt, and act, to aid in adaptive and healing responses to emotional pain.
As a clinical psychologist, I believe that knowledge, awareness, and insight are the cornerstones of therapy. By helping increase emotional awareness and identifying their related thoughts and behaviors, I facilitate understanding of causes and triggers for anxiety, depression, and interpersonal conflict. An appreciation of each individual's unique background and encounters is crucial in comprehending how one relates to new information and experiences. I tailor empirically supported treatment to address emotional distress, and believe we are all active participants in our health and wellness. With the correct tools and insight, we can lead emotionally healthy, successful, and meaningful lives.

Hi, my name is Anna. Feeling misunderstood and other-ed can be deeply challenging, especially if you navigate the world with a unique set of experiences or marginalized ones—whether you're part of the queer and/or trans community, Neurodivergent, facing complex trauma, or dealing with chronic illness.

Seeking help can be a very overwhelming and humbling experience. But it is also a step toward the dignity and self-respect that come from facing, head on, your pain and suffering. Therapy is a lot like learning to hold your hand over a hot flame. Left to our own devices, we wince and turn away. This is why finding a good match, someone you can trust, is essential. And this is why I consider it a privilege to do this work.

We all have the ability to heal from our pain. I am committed to reducing suffering and fostering hope. Studies confirm the most positive outcome from therapy is based on the strength of the therapeutic relationship. I strive to create an empathic, safe, honest and collaborative environment where you are supported and deeply understood. I have successfully treated depression, anxiety, trauma, complicated grief, PTSD, dual diagnosis, and a broad spectrum of disorders. I believe part of this success is my focus on you as a person - not solely on the issue or disorder. It is possible to lead a more fulfilled and meaningful life.

People look for a therapist when they are experiencing anxiety, difficulties in relationships, confusion around issues related to sexuality and/or identity. Others feel depressed, struggle with addiction, or have a sense that something is not right in their lives. Often people are trying to cope with old hurts or injuries, and find that their old ways of coping with them are no longer successful,or that these strategies are the very thing that brings them pain or frustration.Often these symptoms and problems are connected with early painful experiences,or from ideas and beliefs which have been formed in rigid, or dysfunctional family systems.

The process of psychotherapy can be both strange and difficult. You have already taken important and brave beginning steps in deciding to seek out information about therapy and potential therapists. Should you and I decide to work together, I will place great importance on the building of a strong and stable relationship, so that we can work in an open and trusting way. Taking a stance of warmth and curiosity, I create a safe space that welcomes individuals of all cultural, religious, racial, sexual, and gender identities with varying concerns and desires for treatment. We can talk about what will be most helpful to you.

Life is worth living when we feel authentic and genuine, and engage in meaningful relationships. Sadness, grief, disappointment, hurt, and loss are all-natural human emotions. Feeling chronically anxious, depressed, inadequate, or unlovable are not. These unrelenting feelings come from an injury (or injuries) that hasn’t healed. Regardless of where your emotional injury comes from, you can learn to regulate your reactions, heal these wounds, take care of yourself, and connect to your sense of meaning and purpose. The more you live in alignment with your values and what is meaningful to you, the better you will feel.

Chronic Pain Therapists

How does chronic pain therapy work?

Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?

Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophizing, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?

Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
