My specialty is Moral Injury repair with Military members and Veterans as well as resolution of complex trauma in first responders and civilians.
Many people believe that post traumatic stress is something they have to learn to live with. This is unfortunate! And untrue. We now have treatments that reduce/ resolve symptoms of PTSD, Complex PTSD, and Combat Trauma. As a solution-focused therapist, my goal is to help you resolve past traumas so that you can lead a life that is worth celebrating. Utilizing cutting-edge therapeutic approaches we can not only resolve big traumatic events, but can alter and heal long-standing behavior patterns and negative perceptions that may be interfering with your capacity to experience a more fulfilling and meaningful life.

I am a Psychotherapist, Life Coach, and Consultant. In a career that began twenty-five years ago in the Middle East, now established in NY, I have seen clients from every conceivable background who have sought nurturing guidance to face trauma, anxiety, grief and sadness. Often, whether working with persons suffering from loss or separation, abuse victims, veterans, refugees, or families of substance abusers, I have witnessed that moment of clarity in a client when they realize there is actually hope for a better, more satisfying life. This, I believe, is the essence of therapy and I strive to smooth the path towards and beyond it.

Before I became a psychotherapist, I had a career as a professional diplomat, and I served in different countries. Having been exposed to diverse cultures in the course of my life, I am particularly attuned to the varieties of narratives that shape people’s identities and relationships with self and others. In my work with each client, I aim to bring my unique personal and professional perspectives into our therapeutic dialogue. I strive to create a safe and nurturing environment where clients can explore how old patterns—that might no longer serve them—repeat in the present and foreclose future growth.

Many people seek therapy when they feel overwhelmed with new or unexpected life stressors, or when they feel stuck or controlled by their thoughts and feelings. Sometimes we focus so much on being happy, but paradoxically experience happiness as elusive. I work collaboratively with adult clients to change their relationships with their thoughts and feelings, regain control over their actions, and lead meaningful lives. I encourage conversations about identity, oppression, and privilege with my clients, as therapy can be an important space to address the effects of racism, sexism, heterosexism, classism, and ableism on our lives.

Are you unsure if you are on the right path in life? Do you have the sense that something needs to change but aren't clear about what to do differently? Perhaps you do know but are afraid to take the risk. Feeling adrift in life can be scary and unsettling. It can also be incredibly lonely.

Waitlist for new clients
There are many ways that we as human beings suffer and try to cope. Layers of personal, familial, and historical trauma contribute to problematic relationship patterns, bodily pain and illness, over- or under-working, and obsessions. But these symptoms that are a source of suffering are often also expressing things that can't be expressed otherwise or pointing to aspects of living that need more care. I help my clients use words to explore these parts of self, and to have new experiences, in order to make room for a life of more fullness, love, meaning, creativity, and ease.

Veterans Therapists

Why is mental health important for veterans and the military?

Veterans are more likely to face mental health challenges than the general public, and such mental health challenges can make it difficult for them to navigate day-to-day life. Improved mental health can result in better interpersonal relationships, lower levels of stress, and decreased dependence on substances, such as drugs or alcohol, for many veterans. Addressing common mental health conditions can also help facilitate recovery from physical health challenges that are faced by many veterans, such as chronic pain, physical injury, or poor sleeping patterns. Therapists trained in working with veterans can help address these concerns and help improve veteran mental health.

How can veterans get access to mental health support?

There are many resources for veterans to get mental health support, including through the VA or through their primary care doctor. Many service personnel are eligible for free or reduced-cost mental health counseling through the VA, depending on their service history and current income. Veterans can also utilize online directories, such as Psychology Today, or nonprofit organization resources like the Wounded Warrior Project, to find a therapist or other healthcare professional that specializes in their specific mental health needs. Veterans may also benefit from community-based groups that facilitate social connection and/or address specific concerns, such as Alcoholics Anonymous.

What type of therapy is best for veterans?

Veterans may benefit from multiple types of therapy, depending on what mental health challenges they are facing. Veterans seeking therapy for anxiety or depression may benefit from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) or Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), which encourage clients to understand how their thought patterns influence their behavior. Veterans with PTSD may seek other more specialized forms of therapy to treat trauma symptoms, such as EMDR or exposure therapy. Many veterans and military personnel may also benefit from family or couples counseling to address the stress and adjustment challenges that can be associated with military life.

Can therapy for veterans help with trauma and PTSD?

Therapy can be highly effective in helping veterans with trauma and PTSD. Therapists specializing in veteran mental health often have extensive training and experience helping veterans navigate symptoms of trauma and can teach clients coping techniques to handle common symptoms associated with trauma and PTSD. Some therapists may use talk therapy as their primary approach, while others utilize more structured therapy modalities in sessions, such as EMDR. Veterans can try multiple therapy modalities to find the best fit for them. Therapists can also help make referrals or connect clients with available resources, such as VA benefits, to help address other life concerns.
