Accepting New Clients! Are you pregnant but not feeling like yourself? Or a new mom who feels like you are failing in the parenting business? Feel like you get upset with your partner for what seems to be “small things"? Perhaps you are trying desperately to get pregnant only to be faced with infertility or recurring miscarriages. Depression in women is quite common, we just don’t go around talking about it. We put on a happy face and do what we feel is expected of us. But statistics tell us that approximately 20% of women experience depression or anxiety while pregnant or just after having a baby.

I enjoy working with adults and couples who are experiencing anxiety, depression, and overall stressful life situations that impact your self esteem and wellbeing. I specialize in helping people learn how to regulate your mood and make positive change.

I am a client-centered therapist who uses the strength-based perspective to help individuals identify their difficulties and build coping skills to manage their symptoms. With this in mind, my ideal client would be someone dedicated to introspection, open to new perspectives and information, and wiling to challenge themselves to grow. I would love my clients to leave sessions stronger, more informed and a little "lighter."

Welcome to my corner of the internet! I aim to help clients find happiness and purpose in their day to day lives. I believe that you are the expert in your own life, and my role is to help you identify tools that will help you more effectively navigate life's stressors. I will work with you to build a strong therapeutic alliance based on trust and respect. My goal as a therapist is to empower my clients to create the space and strength to embrace their uniqueness and gifts. Client's often report that I am easy to talk to, which I'd say is a great starting point, because the client therapist fit is key.

Compassion Focused Therapists

How does compassion-focused therapy work?

Compassion-Focused Therapy is based on the idea that humans have at least three emotion regulation systems, including one that responds to threats and another that allows us to self-soothe. Those who experienced serious childhood adversity, the theory goes, have a hyperactive threat system and an underperforming self-soothing system, leaving them vulnerable to shame and a hypercritical mindset. CFT focuses on bringing these systems back into balance, helping the client be kinder to themselves and better able to accept kindness from others.

Is compassion-focused therapy a type of CBT?

Compassion-focused therapy is closely related to cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and employs many of its techniques. In addition to CBT, CFT also draws from the fields of biology, evolutionary psychology, neuroscience, developmental psychology, and Buddhism. It also has similarities to some types of trauma-focused therapies.

Is compassion-focused therapy evidence based?

Evidence suggests that CFT can be helpful in the treatment of anxiety, mood disorders, eating disorders, personality disorders, psychosis, and other mental illnesses. It has also been shown to be beneficial for individuals who may not have diagnosable psychiatric disorders but who still struggle with persistent self-criticism and feelings of shame.

What are the limitations of compassion-focused therapy?

Compassion-focused therapy is still a relatively new therapy, and research on its efficacy is still in its early stages; while some studies have found positive results, many have suffered from quality issues or small sample sizes. And while most CFT clients find it difficult to practice self-compassion at first, some—especially those who actively fear compassion or are deeply uncomfortable being cared for—may not be fully open to the tenets of CFT, potentially limiting the therapy’s long-term effectiveness.
