I am a board-certified psychiatrist and award-winning psychoanalyst with extensive training in interpersonal therapy and psychodynamic therapy.
I work with creative professionals in their 20s-40s who struggle with anxiety, persistent feelings of sadness, or a general sense of stagnation. I have specific expertise with college-age students, overwhelmed parents, and ambitious professionals who feel burnt out. I use a strengths-based approach to help you gain control of your life. Though all psychotherapy takes time, my patients consistently notice some new skills within the first six weeks of treatment. I suggest medications when indicated, but these are optional. Whatever you are struggling with- it is real, it is treatable, and we will confront it together.

Hi! My name is Dr. Sara Chun, MD. I am a board-certified psychiatrist who provides medication management. I hope to provide an informative space for patients to consider different treatment options and collaboratively find their personal balance between therapy, skills, and medicine. I also want to understand any questions or apprehensions that folks may have about taking psychiatric medications. While I primarily manage medications, I incorporate cognitive behavioral, dialectic, and psychodynamic therapy approaches into my sessions in hopes of making our meetings more useful and robust.

When life feels clouded by depression or anxiety, it can seem like the joyful world you once knew is just out of reach. It's like a puzzle piece is missing, but it's hard to figure out which one. I've heard this from many clients, and together we've managed to fill in those gaps. We've addressed conditions like depression, anxiety, bipolar disorders, and peripartum disorders using a blend of medication and therapy. If it aligns with your beliefs, we can incorporate Christian Biblical principles into your treatment. Let's work collaboratively to rediscover the joy and peace in your world.

No matter what stage in life you are, problems and issues arise. These may take the form of conflict within ourselves, manifesting as depression or anxiety that interferes with our lives. Or perhaps it may take the form of interpersonal conflict that makes it difficult to connect with our friends and loved ones. These issues are only exacerbated if you are dealing with it alone. However, the reality is that you don't have to. If you are looking for a psychiatrist to help you through tough times, then you have found the right place.

As a psychoanalytically trained psychiatrist, I provide comprehensive treatment for a variety of mental health problems informed by the view of each person as an integrated body/mind/brain individual. The state of that integration is reflected in the physical, emotional and social wellbeing, manifesting in depressed and anxious states, as well as a variety of other mental and/or physical problems. Treatment recommendations are based on the assessment of these disturbances in the context of understanding personal history, as well as present day life demands and aspirations. They include individual, couples or family psychotherapy, with psychotropic medication if indicated.

Psychodynamic Psychiatrists

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?

Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
