Whether working with a survivor of childhood sexual abuse having flashbacks; a couple having the same fight; a young adult unable to transition to independent life; or a person trapped in an unsatisfying job or relationship, I have an extensive "tool kit" to facilitate change.
I am a licensed clinical social worker, with over 35 years of experience. I have a variety of clinical interests and areas of specialization, including the treatment of trauma and PTSD; couples therapy with heterosexual, gay and lesbian couples; analytic work "launching" young adults; Ericksonian hypnosis; EMDR;Sensorimotor Psychotherapy; adolescent and family therapy; and in-depth analytic work with individuals who are feeling stuck in repetitive patterns or dynamics left over from childhood, and want to change. I have led ongoing therapy groups for women with interpersonal trauma histories for over 30 years.
This is an in-person, long-term support group for adult male survivors of childhood sexual abuse. You may carry shame, fear, anger, numbness, or isolation. This group offers a safe, confidential space to explore those experiences and connect with others who understand. Through a steady, trust-building process, members work toward greater vulnerability, emotional presence, and healing. Members must also be in individual therapy with a licensed provider. All AMAB individuals are welcome. If you're unsure whether you're ready, that’s okay—reach out for a consultation to see if this group may be a good fit.

I also facilitate an ongoing support group for male survivors of childhood sexual abuse.
My approach is mainly psychodynamic. I also incorporate IFS, somatics, dreamwork, and other modalities as needed. Over time, we will try to uncover the ways your past and present are linked, and how conscious and unconscious thoughts, feelings, and conflicts may shape your experience. We will also try to understand how culture and environment play a role.
GROUP IS CURRENTLY CLOSED; will begin screening again in January 2021. The group is for women who are healing from childhood sexual abuse and who want to tell their story. Some experience with therapy is necessary. The group is time-limited to approximately 15 sessions.

Previously, I worked part-time at an outpatient clinic for sexual assault and abuse survivors.
I work well with couples who are experiencing difficulties with communication, trust, violence, infidelity, divorce, and trauma.
I am trained in EMDR and Focusing-Oriented therapy. In my work with individual clients, often the focus of therapy is helping with depression, anxiety, self-esteem, and sexual orientation and identity. I also have experience working with individuals and couples dealing with infertility and fertility treatments.
Melissa's Group for Female Adult Survivors of Childhood Sexual Abuse was designed to help women understand the effects of trauma, reduce feelings of shame and guilt, and empower women. This 12-session group progresses through 3 stages: Trauma and Its Manifestations, Telling Your Story, and Empowerment. Groups are limited to 3-5 members for the safety and the comfort needed to disclose sensitive information. We will explore: the effects of trauma, maladaptive coping strategies, support systems, self-care, guilt, shame and stigma, feelings of isolation, vulnerability as a child, empowerment, self-esteem, healthy coping mechanisms, developing healthy relationships and more.

Additionally, adults of Childhood Sexual Abuse know it can negatively impact every area of your life.
I value collaborating with clients to identify the origin of a problem and how it was reinforced, to reach your goals. Using mindfulness with CBT and psychodynamic therapy is key to transforming old thought patterns into new adaptive ones. This, and the connection I make with my clients allows us to create an individual plan that meets your unique needs.
The vibe of group is calm and relaxed. No one is required to share anything that they don't want to. Common themes addressed include, but are not limited to: flashbacks, feeling safe, sexuality, self-blame, others' reactions, coping skills, the criminal justice system, etc. I've been running groups centered on this topic for 15 years and have found it to be a very moving and powerful experience for clients. There is a special kind of connection and healing that comes from peer interactions in conjunction with therapist/client interaction. Schedule: Monday OR Wednesday evenings, 7:00-8:30.

I offer individual and group sessions, including a group for adult survivors of child sexual abuse.
My work with clients focuses on the empowerment and healing of women and girls. The female experience is unique and challenging in itself, even when life goes smoothly. When we encounter hardship or trauma, often related to abuse or gender-based violence, our experience, perception, and often view of the whole world shifts. Even our bodies start to make physiological accommodations to help keep us safe in response. As a therapist, I will help you discover a sense of safety, peace, and reconnection to your body and others, as you heal from past experiences, process difficult emotions, and create a life full of joy and purpose.
This is a supportive and confidential therapy group designed for men seeking to heal from the effects of sexual trauma and address behaviors, including sexual addiction, that may have developed as a response to past experiences. This group provides a safe, nonjudgmental space to explore emotions, build healthier relationships, and develop effective coping strategies. Together, we focus on resilience, self-awareness, and reclaiming control over your life. Join a community of understanding and strength as you navigate your path to healing and personal growth.

My clinical focus includes post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), childhood sexual abuse, sexual addiction, adjustment to major life changes, and challenges with self-esteem and confidence.
As a psychotherapist with over 10 years of experience, I’m deeply committed to helping clients overcome limiting beliefs and achieve real growth. My client-centered, strength-based approach focuses on understanding your individual needs and empowering you to create the life you deserve. You will find a safe, supportive space to share your story.
This group is currently CLOSED.

The Black Men's Only Trauma Group is a group specifically for Black men that have a history of childhood sexual abuse or sexual abuse as an adult. Individuals that are considered for group participation must be in weekly on-going individual psychotherapy for at least 2 years, and meet with me for consultation for a minimum of 3 individual sessions before entering the group.

Clients come to me with concerns, including anxiety, depression, family conflict, and struggles with intimacy. They feel stuck, angry with those around them, or caught in destructive patterns of behavior, yet they cannot seem to understand why. The relationship we build during treatment is a powerful tool to address these patterns that you feel unable to escape. Psychotherapy provides you space to safely explore these issues and work towards changing the patterns. I help my clients develop an appreciation for their life and work. Together we will explore the uncomfortable feelings and behaviors that prevent inner fulfillment, pursuit of goals, and overall life satisfaction.
An in-person men's group for non-offending individuals who are seeking to heal from the emotional scars of childhood sexual, physical & emotional abuse is held every Monday. Meeting in a safe and encouraging environment, we will explore the complex issues associated with abuse and will learn healing techniques. The in-person group is held for 10 weeks each fall & spring.
An individual session with Tom is required prior to joining the group.

At the present time, I am not accepting new clients for individual counseling. However, I will accept clients for a wait list to join treatment groups that I facilitate throughout the year. These include: Empowering Male Survivors of Childhood Abuse, a monthly ERP work group and a monthly OCD support group for skill review to manage OCD symptoms. There is more information in my profile regarding these group treatments.
Six week group series will take place once per season. Participants can re-enroll at the beginning of each new series. Group Therapy provides not just one, but many sources of support, validation, and understanding. Group members learn how to talk about their trauma with less shame, transforming their victimization into empowerment. There will also be opportunity for in person workshops in the near future.

I began my social work career in 2005 with a commitment to supporting those who have experienced trauma, addiction, and other challenges that society often overlooks or stigmatizes. Over the years, I’ve built a comprehensive toolbox of strategies and skills — and I’m passionate about sharing these with anyone willing to learn and apply them. Relief doesn’t mean life becomes free of struggles, but it does mean those struggles won’t derail your entire world.

Sexual Abuse Support Groups
How do therapists treat sexual abuse?
A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.
Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?
Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.
How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?
Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.
Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?
As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
