I use Best Practices such as CBT and Mindfulness for depression and anxiety, and for a deeper dive into relationships or developing creative potential, or coping with illness, I also employ Psychodynamic therapy.
Is depression or anxiety affecting your relationships or job? Do you need help developing your creative potential? Are you coping with illness? Using my experience as a UCLA family medicine psychologist and a published author/creative writing instructor, I've helped countless people navigate relationships, jobs, cope with illness, or launch their writing careers. I am uniquely equipped to help women, writers, and the chronically ill client. As a graduate of Howard University, I was trained to treat culturally diverse clients. Using a combination of CBT and Psychodynamic therapies, I treat adolescents, adults, and couples.

You don't have to deal with the symptoms of depression, anxiety, loneliness, low self-esteem and relationship problems alone. Group therapy provides an ideal environment to heal and grow. Most symptoms are affected by the relationships in your life. Understanding yourself and how you engage in relationships is the work of group therapy. Group therapy improves our functioning in all these relationships, easing the symptoms that arise from unsatisfying relationships.

I run a dually diagnosed substance abuse group that works on helping members identify the triggers that lead them to abuse alcohol/drugs. In most settings, substance abuse is worked on independantly without focus on understanding how emotional triggers plays a roles in their abuse. What are you trying to run away from? how does that drug of choice help alleviate the pain? What are the alternatives to using? The group works on helping its members gain insight into themselves. Awareness, understanding, support are factors that help in people's recovery.

I believe that all people have an innate ability and desire for growth. Some of us just need that someone that they can talk to. Most of us think we are strong enough to be able to work it out on our own. Unfortunately, that is not always true. We tend to be our own worst enemy. Sometimes, a different perspective is all it takes. Many of us live life in accordance to our "belief system". If we carry a negative self view or the world, how can we expect to live life to it's fullest. We are working to heal our inner child through self-compassion, understanding, non-judgement and validation of self and others.

I believe in a holistic, trauma-informed, and strengths-based approach to healing anxiety, depression, trauma, and addiction.
Our life experiences can lead us to question our identity and purpose in the world we live in. This can lead us to anxiety, depression, and trauma. Do you want to improve how you face challenges, function in your relationships, and face overwhelming feelings? I place heavy importance on addressing trauma. Trauma disintegrates the parts that make up your whole self, which can leave aspects of who you are hidden from your awareness. Left unaddressed, anxiety and depression can worsen, which can rob you of the necessary connection that all human beings need to thrive. I aim to help you process unresolved trauma.

Life can be complicated, full of change and challenges. Although we have all come up with ways get through these times or cope, sometimes challenges persist, resurface or feel overwhelming. Significant change requires deep personal examination, something difficult to do on our own. Psychotherapy is an effective way to help us understand our behavior and its connection to our inner emotional experience. It helps to resolve common problems that often impact our daily functioning including depression, anxiety, stress, relationship issues, bereavement, and difficult life phases. Psychotherapy is a supportive process promoting exploration, growth and change.

I believe people want to express who they are and pursue satisfying work and relationships, but have emotional and cognitive patterns that keep them stuck. These patterns often consolidate into a persona that leaves people feeling not quite themselves, with needs unrealized, feelings ignored, and potential unused. Symptoms of anxiety and depression, addictions, or low self-esteem, are often the only messengers trying to let us know that we are needing change. In a supportive and safe environment, therapy can help to bring these patterns into awareness and liberate needs to connect, create, and expand with fuller emotional support.

When our emotional life is out of balance or unregulated we often find ourselves repeating patterns that become self-defeating. These self-defeating patterns can leave us feeling anxious, unsatisfied, or depressed, and often lead to low self-esteem. We may feel shame, the feeling that something is deeply wrong with me or that I am defective, different, or not good enough. When these emotions are untreated we may isolate or seek relationships hoping they will make us better. We have found that generally when a person experiences different types of trauma, distress and dysregulation caused by trauma can lead to other manifestations of the pain including addiction, depression, anxiety, self-harm, and attachment difficulties. We may compulsively eat, use drugs or alcohol, spend, or over work. We may find we walk through life always ready for the other shoe to drop, full of tension and anxiety or even experiencing panic attacks. Or we may find that we have lost interest in things that once brought us joy and live our lives feeling sad or numb.

Depression Support Groups

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
