I believe one of the bravest things you can do is begin to understand your OWN story! You deserve to live a life that leaves you excited to wake up every morning. You want to connect with someone who is real and can empathize with your experience. I am as real as they get! The first step, making a call to a therapist, can be the most difficult step of the entire process. Take a moment and a few deep breaths and call to see how I can help. Life is too short to be weighed down with stress, anxiety, or trauma from past experiences. You deserve to be free of emotional worries and able to create a life worth living.

While many have depression there are uniquenesses to how women of color experience their symptoms. Additionally, many clinical treatment modalities were not created with consideration for minority cultural life experiences. I am a therapist in training with years of personal experience living with depression and was at one time suicidal. I bring to this group warmth, knowledge and a space to be fully culturally present. This telehealth virtual group will meet weekly for six weeks beginning in April. Please consider a complementary 30 minute intake discussion, group is limited to 8 participants.

This is a Blackcentric space for Black Women to explore setting healthy boundaries and practicing assertive skills. Boundary setting is essential, yet particularly challenging for women who are frequently PERCEIVED as argumentative, disagreeable and aggressive. The group is a safe space for reflection and will be kept intentionally small to support intimate sharing. This 2 hours group will meet weekly virtually and will not take insurance but a superbill can be prepared. Contact me to set up a complementary 30 minute discussion to see how this experience will benefit you.

You’ve tried everything, but your child is struggling despite your best efforts. You’re constantly managing their tear-streaked tantrums or sullen silences. “Time outs” don’t work, rewards don’t work, you want to pull your hair out sometimes. You’ve tried talking to them, but they won’t tell you what they need. You wish you could read their mind. Pain and anxiety are written all over your child’s face. You so badly want to help but don’t know how. The helplessness and guilt you feel to see them suffer are almost too much to bear. You’ll never give up searching for a way to help them. There’s nothing you wouldn’t do for your child.

Life presents us with many unexpected challenges that can leave us feeling hurt, lonely, anxious and stressed. Maybe you are struggling with insecurity, uncertainty or a lack of direction. In times of distress, it can be difficult to share with anyone, let alone someone you’ve never met. Building a relationship is the most important step in the counseling process and hinges on empathy, respect and safety within the therapy office. Healing happens when we feel fully accepted while being vulnerable and authentic. This can only be achieved through a strong therapeutic alliance. In this space, you will be welcomed, heard and supported.

Anxiety Support Groups

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
