Perfectionist teens with anxiety from high-pressure academics or extra curricular activities (specifically performance arts).
Welcome to therapy, where you can laugh, cry, dissociate, and finally confront those feelings you’ve been hiding with dark-humor. All parts of you are invited into this space (yes, even your inner child who you keep ignoring). Together, we will explore the depths of your identity and encourage change through empathy, curiosity, and creativity (including some coping skills and interventions to help you out!). I’m a trauma-informed, creative, queer, & neurodivergent therapist seeing clients in Maryland (MD) and District of Columbia (DC). Individuals, couples, and teens (13+) are populations I work with.

Welcome to Roots and Wings! For us, roots signifies the importance of uncovering the origin of an issue, through deep inquiry and knowing one’s history, and wings symbolizes liberation, freedom and growth. Both are essential components to the therapeutic process. Together we can go deep and get free!

I help stressed and overwhelmed professionals who look like they have it all together on the outside but may have a few things bothering them on the inside. You might be the person who everyone goes to for support and advice, but when you share your concerns, it's not taken as seriously by your family or friends. This may leave you feeling anxious, frustrated, depressed, and isolated despite crushing it at work, as a parent, or when leading at church. Maybe you are a spouse/partner, parent, healthcare provider, or pastor/clergy who has current or past stressors that are weighing you down or leaving you feeling out of sorts.

I work with young adults and older, who face challenges such as depression, anxiety, substance abuse due to physical or emotional pain, as well people with relationship issues and other life struggles.
Sometimes you need a catalyst to begin moving towards a richer and more meaningful life. Family and friends are not always enough to guide, support and challenge you to see things from a different perspective. It can be hard to know where to start. I have seen the positive life changing effects that therapy has on people who suffer from trauma, anxiety, grief and loss as well as other distressing events, and enjoy working with people towards a healthier and more satisfying life.

You’re tired of worrying and thinking about what you should do in your relationships. It feels like a burden to be the one who always has to do the right thing. You’re tired of dismissing your own feelings and needs; but you’re conflicted and feel selfish if you do what you want. Relationships become stressful when you feel like you’re the one who puts in all the effort. If you have a history of people-pleasing or anxiety, it can be difficult to break out of the pattern of doing what others expect from you. If you’re struggling with a family member who has mental health challenges, this can add grief and complexity to the situation.

Yoga Nidra, also known as yogic sleep or lucid sleep, is an ancient practice that is the perfect antidote for today's stressed and fast paced life. It can induce full-body relaxation and a deep conscious meditative state. Yoga Nidra uses guided imagery and body scans and is a systematic method of complete relaxation, holistically addressing your physiological, neurological, and subconscious needs. Yoga Nidra quiets the overactive conscious mind, inviting you into meditative states of deep contentment and equanimity. When brain waves slow down to a delta state, a subtle euphoria can occur.

Therapeutic Yoga 8-Week Series: Somatic Intelligence In Somatic-Informed Yoga, we listen to the messages our body communicates to our mind as impulses, sensations, or instincts. Our body's natural intelligence may ask us to lean in deeper or back away from the direction our mind wants to go. In this process, we cultivate a more respectful and trusting relationship between mind & body. We will explore and increase our appreciation for our whole body and its many parts. We will also draw upon an array of yogic practices including gentle, yin, somatics, kriya, restorative, pranayam, yoga nidra, and meditation.

Anxiety Support Groups

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
