I wonder if you have been feeling sad, stressed or anxious? Have these feelings been with you for a long time? Are you wondering when they will reappear? It’s like dreading what is around the corner and finding it hard to enjoy or feel good in the present. Other people look like they’re having fun but your world is a shade of grey. Things that you loved doing no longer give you happiness and it's hard to concentrate. At times it takes lots of energy to go out or spend time with people who care about you. Your confidence and ability to cope disappear as you become stuck and the people around you become as worn down as you feel.

In a challenging and fast pace world we all need our optimum Self to deal with the demands of life; maintaining and keeping relationships, keeping up the functional aspects of our lives, pursuing dreams and interests, pleasure activities, being at ease when alone, and being comfortable in social settings - friends, events, education and work. Meeting the extra demands that life often presents - relationship breakups, divorce, loss of work, bereavement, mental health issues, loss of home and financial collapse, family turmoil or dysfunctionality, traumatic events, loss of health - requires a robust sense of Self, enabling change.

We all develop ways to protect ourselves, even when they don't serve us well. If you feel you want to create new ways of being to replace the armour that no longer serves you, we can make that journey together. If you feel that you're not living to your full potential or that you're never really heard, supported or understood, if anxiety is ever present, you don't need to be alone as we can explore all this together. If your mind is an endless cycle of thoughts keeping you awake at night, expressing your thoughts in a safe environment can bring them into the open for you to examine from a different perspective.

Whatever may be troubling you, I can help. Our lives are impacted by our history, culture, social circumstances, friendships and a whole host of other factors. These aspects condition us to respond and interact with people and situations in our lives in very particular ways. My work with you would be to understand your life from your unique perspective and help you get in touch with a more resourced part of yourself, which is beyond the psychological and social conditioning, to help you overcome any difficulties or challenges you may be facing.

How does therapy for self-harm work?

A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behaviour therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.

Which therapies are best for self-harm?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioural, dialectical behaviour, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioural and dialectical behaviour therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.

Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?

Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
