I work well with clients who seek practical, emotional, psychological and spiritual support and guidance. I am passionate about spirituality, mental health, education and personal development so particularly love working with people who are open to their own growth and transformation. My intuitive skills help me to understand the psychic or energetic nature of my client and this approach informs my practice of psychotherapy. My approach is compassionate, friendly and authentic. I am interested in what is good and true. I have a super amount of life and work experience as a teacher, healer, counsellor and therapist.

If you are searching for a safe space to be with what is around for you right now, I can help you. You may be feeling stuck, facing important life decisions. You may be struggling with a relationship. There might be a lot of pressure around. Perhaps you have lost a sense of who you are. Life might have lost a little direction. You may be facing an enforced or welcome change or transition in your life. Maybe you are looking for a little support with someone you can trust. Something might need healing. You are strong and capable and also there is a part needing some compassion and care.

I offer psychotherapy, counselling and EMDR on a variety of issues. How we work will depend on who you are and what's happening for you at this moment. Sometimes its important to explore the past and its impact on today, and sometimes our work is to find ways to live with some of the existential challenges of ‘being human’. We might work creatively with the unconscious, or we might look to ground your experiences in your body: learning to collaborate with your body and listen to your felt sense of the world.

We all know the routine: "How are you?" "I'm fine, thanks" – the standard response, hiding a deeper truth. Beneath the brave face, you might be feeling less connected to loved ones, friends, or even yourself. Sometimes anxious, as though in a crowded room yet completely alone. Perhaps the energy needed to connect has disappeared, leaving you feeling less able to engage? Or, maybe you’re aware of a sensation of emptiness or loss? Talking about your true feelings can sometimes be a daunting first step, but it's also the most important one towards feeling better.

Working and being trained in the Person-Centred approach (PCA), means offering and holding a space of understanding, acceptance and authenticity, that is ultimately led by you. It's an approach that I feel attuned to due to it’s philosophy, its attempts to address power and how it can facilitate people in their process and journey of change, whatever that may be. My counselling is based on a relationship where we work together but you decide what we talk about and the direction of the therapy.

A warm hello and thank you for taking a look at my profile. I'm a qualified integrative counsellor, who offers a safe, professional, and caring space where I sit with my clients to explore what hurts. Experiences such as anxiety, loneliness, depression, loss, injury, trauma, abuse, identity, life direction and meaning, family issues, low self-esteem are often painful. They can also be seen as our internal system telling us to take a closer look at what's going on inside. Experience has shown me that taking the time to gently explore life events and related thoughts, feelings and behaviours with curiosity can be life-changing.

Many of my clients talk about how counselling allows them to discuss things with someone who is not directly affected, and who will offer a safe place in which to do it. It can provide people the chance to really reflect on how they, themselves are feeling, away from the life and expectations that they experience with others around them. Whatever your reason for reaching out, well done for making this step and I hope that I can be of help :)

Life can be incredibly challenging at times, overwhelming even. Any one of us can be left feeling depleted, not good enough, or unable to cope alone, in any given circumstance. Being offered the opportunity to be heard without judgement, or criticism, along with the chance to experience Yourself as You are, rather than how You think You 'should' be, can be very powerful and incredibly beneficial.

The reasons we seek counselling are many and varied. Sometimes there is a sudden loss or trauma, but sometimes there are layers of difficult experiences where one more is too many, and we can become overwhelmed. These may be current events or traumatic experiences from long ago that continue to affect life today. We may begin to distance ourselves from friends and family as we try to make sense of difficult feelings and emotions alone. Perhaps because we don't want to burden others or from unresolved or misplaced feelings of guilt or shame. Reaching out for support can be difficult, but contacting me is easy, please get in touch.

Hi my name is Karen. Thank you for looking at my profile. I often find that people who seek Counselling and Psychotherapy do so for many reasons that are common to many. You may be wanting a safe and confidential space to speak about a problem causing difficulties. It might be that you feel unable to speak to those closest to you and you need someone outside of your life, someone separate and non judgemental to talk with to help you make sense of things so that you can start to feel better and indeed make some changes. You might not know what help is out there or where to begin, here is a starting point.

Spirituality Counsellors

What should I expect from therapy that incorporates a focus on spirituality?

Spirituality can mean different things to different individuals, depending on their experiences, beliefs, and life histories. Some individuals focus on strengthening their belief system, while others experience spirituality in secular ways, such as through meditation, yoga, or by spending time in nature. Clients can expect a therapist to help guide and grow their spirituality through any of these techniques, encouraging the individual to cope with the challenges they face and develop strategies to build resilience and purpose to improve their outlook in life.

What are the most common treatments that include spirituality?

There are several treatments that incorporate spirituality. Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) helps a person examine and reframe their negative thoughts and behaviours. Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) focuses on emotional acceptance and psychological flexibility. Existential therapy is most often used to address anxiety, depression, grief, loneliness, apathy, despair, questions of identity, and feelings of purposelessness and existential dread. Transpersonal therapy focuses on a client’s spirituality and meaning in life and may incorporate techniques including meditation, visualisation, hypnotherapy, dream analysis, and or breathwork.

Can therapy incorporating spirituality help atheistic or agnostic individuals?

Yes. For non-believers, spirituality can offer benefits including a greater sense of connection to others and to the natural world. An interest in spirituality may also spur individuals to pursue mindfulness practices, or to contemplate their purpose in life and how to achieve it.

How effective is spirituality as a therapeutic remedy?

Research suggests spirituality is generally beneficial for individuals. It is correlated with better health habits, such as less substance use, and an improved capacity to cope with stress and other mental health challenges. Increased spirituality can lead individuals to become more empathic and less materialistic, as well.
