These early relationships have an impact on people's present behaviours, affects and relational patterns.
My clients choose to see me to help them address specific issues or to explore their thoughts and feelings in particular moments in their lives. Whatever the reason I offer them a confidential space where they can allow themselves to open up as much as they are comfortable with. Often issues are linked to self-esteem, self-worth and the difficulty to fully accept oneself. Clients are often able to become more confident in themselves and in relationships as they learn how to be more compassionate and kind to themselves. Therapy can help clients become happier, more fulfilled and successful in their life journey.

I am a central London-based BACP accredited Integrative Psychotherapeutic Counsellor. I am also a trained coach so weave these two skills into my practice. I specialise in relationships – the most critical being the relationship we have with ourselves, but also our partner, siblings, parents, our children, friends and work colleagues. I also specialise in helping people in highly demanding jobs. I used to work in corporate consultancy and so know first-hand the stresses of such an unforgiving career. Thus, I am more likely to ‘get’ the struggles of what it is like in your role..

Often the best starting place for therapy is to talk about some of the thoughts and feelings that you've been having. Perhaps you are feeling depressed, anxious or overwhelmed? Maybe you're struggling to make sense of a relationship, or a problematic behaviour? Perhaps you are hoping to find a new direction in life? In our work together, my aim is to be guided by your sense of curiosity while making sure that any sensitive topics or memories can emerge gently and at your own pace. It may sound simple but this kind of therapeutic conversation can help you to reflect deeply on your life and open up new avenues for your future.

If you’re reading this, it’s likely that you are not in a good place. Maybe slightly off the track, struggling to make sense of your thoughts and feelings, or perhaps completely overwhelmed. You may need support, guidance, or just an empathetic other who can give you their undivided attention in a safe place where you don’t need to censor yourself. I have an MSc in psychodynamic psychotherapy and counselling. I work at the NHS both as an adult psychotherapist at a complex trauma unit, and as a perinatal psychotherapist working with pregnant women, and vulnerable parents and their infants and toddlers.

How does relational therapy work?

Relational therapy was developed by psychologist Jean Miller, whose ideas stressed that having strong connections with others encourages better health and well-being when compared with a lonely existence. Conversely, poor interpersonal relationships do not foster growth and learning. Relational therapy also encourages trust in others and patience with others, along with better communication and less conflict.

Is relational therapy evidence-based?

Relational therapy is not well-studied, and it may not be as effective in treating certain mental health conditions when compared with evidence-based treatments like cognitive behavioural or acceptance and commitment therapy. However, relational therapy uses techniques found in cognitive behavioural therapy as well as psychodynamic therapy, which are both well-studied with empirical research.

How long are people typically in relational therapy?

Clients may see improvement after a few weeks or months of therapy. Like cognitive behavioral therapy, relational therapy can reduce symptoms within 10 to 20 weeks, at 45 to 50 minutes once a week. But like any type of therapy, improvement depends on the person and the severity of the problem.

Does relational therapy work?

While no therapy type will work for everyone, some evidence suggests that this therapy can be effective. Relational therapy can help a person manage problematic relationships as well as the mental health conditions that accompany difficult relationships like depression or anxiety. This therapy type may offer benefits that are hard to measure but can be just as valuable—including feelings of higher self-worth or healthier connections with others.
