Hi, I'm Chris. I offer psychotherapy and psychotherapeutic counselling in Leeds. I see therapy as the co-creation of a warm, authentic relationship, in which we create the conditions to shine a light onto the wounded or neglected parts of the self. I offer open ended sessions, which allows our work together to unfold naturally, leading us into the places where we can explore the roots of your emotional development and relational patterns. This is a process that encourages healing and growth, helping you to becoming more in tune and at ease with who you are as a unique person.

I've healed those relational wounds and have trained in a Relational approach to Integrative Psychotherapy.
Do you feel different than other people, like nobody seems to understand you? Do you often feel like an outsider? Perhaps you have trouble standing up for yourself or speaking your truth. Do you tend to cater to other people's needs and don’t get what you need? Do people sometimes tell you that you're a loving and giving person, but you feel flawed and unlovable? Do you feel uncomfortable in social situations, fearing that people will reject you if you stand out? Do you feel depressed? Do you often feel anxious? Perhaps you often don’t know what you need or want. Are you very hard on yourself and have lots of self-critical thoughts?

I provide a non-defensive practice based in an attitude of openness, generosity, negotiation, spontaneity and relational availability and a recognition and acceptance of appropriate risk.
Are things getting on top of you, so that your day to day living is a struggle, and your relationships with others are strained? Do you feel like past, or current, events are effecting how you cope with life today? I help people feel more confidence in their relationships by identifying the hurdles that are holding them back. I help people to find peace of mind by managing their anxiety or low mood. I support people through their bereavement to enable them to enjoy life again. Let me help you to make sense of your difficulties, so that you can connect more positively with your loved ones and the world.

The type of therapy I practice is relational and developmentally informed.
I work with adults of all ages looking for short or long term therapy. I will work to build a safe relationship with you, so that together we can explore your history, current relationships and any difficulties you may be experiencing. I believe that our relationships with ourselves, others and the world around us are very important to good health. We learn to be in relationship through our earliest relational experiences and these patterns often continue to play out in the here and now without us being aware of them. With awareness, comes more choice about how you want to live.

Working as an integrative relational therapist simply means I am not bound by one therapy type, but instead use relationally based tools to best fit the clients difficulties.
Feeling sad, traumatised or disconnected from the world, or perhaps struggling with unhelpful behaviours leaving you feeling anxious and low. This often is a result of conflict with the relationship with ourselves or others, at work or at home. Relational conflict with partners, parents, friendships and colleagues can make us feel vulnerable, unsafe and unable to cope. Clients tend to be the best expert on their experience and often understand what's concerning them but are stuck and unable to find a way through. It takes courage to face into some of our issues but recognising we have them is the hardest part.

I am an integrative relational psychotherapist.
People seek therapy for many different reasons. It may be a new situation which is causing difficulties or more deep-rooted anxieties / past experiences which you are ready to explore. It might be that you simply want the opportunity to share personal thoughts and feelings in a safe environment with someone separate from your day-to day relationships. Sometimes clients feel that there are hidden parts of themselves which want to be heard and understood without the fear of unwanted judgement or criticism.

I am an integrative and relational therapist who will offer you the space to look at what is going on for you in a safe and manageable way.
Welcome... Are you feeling lost in the darkness, just getting through the day and putting on a fake self and smile to others? Maybe you're fearful, people pleasing, keeping busy , avoiding conflict and criticism at all costs? Are you exhausted no matter how much rest you get, sad about the past or anxious about the future? Are you scared of ending up alone, critical of yourself, feel like you're not good enough or that you don't fit in or belong? Are you feeling constantly stressed, over thinking and find it hard to relax or switch of? Is it hard to trust people and let your guard down? I hear you.

I am an integrative counsellor; psychotherapist and clinical supervisor. My therapeutic practice is based largely on the relational approach, this means I place great emphasis on the relationship between you and I as it is our relationship which becomes the vehicle for your therapeutic journey. Each person is unique and I will draw on modalities that I feel will most suit you and the issues that you present to me. During our sessions I would like you to have as much autonomy as possible but I shall also give direction should you need it.

I understand that the decision to start therapy is rarely made lightly, and taking that first step can feel overwhelming. You may be feeling apprehensive, anxious, and sceptical about sharing your innermost thoughts and emotions with a stranger. It takes immense courage to be vulnerable and talk about the difficulties you are experiencing, and I want you to know that I fully appreciate and respect your decision to seek help. You might be facing a specific problem that you want to address, such as relationship issues, anxiety. Alternatively, you may have a sense that something in your life is not quite right, but cannot identify it.

Relational Counsellors

How does relational therapy work?

Relational therapy was developed by psychologist Jean Miller, whose ideas stressed that having strong connections with others encourages better health and well-being when compared with a lonely existence. Conversely, poor interpersonal relationships do not foster growth and learning. Relational therapy also encourages trust in others and patience with others, along with better communication and less conflict.

Is relational therapy evidence-based?

Relational therapy is not well-studied, and it may not be as effective in treating certain mental health conditions when compared with evidence-based treatments like cognitive behavioural or acceptance and commitment therapy. However, relational therapy uses techniques found in cognitive behavioural therapy as well as psychodynamic therapy, which are both well-studied with empirical research.

How long are people typically in relational therapy?

Clients may see improvement after a few weeks or months of therapy. Like cognitive behavioral therapy, relational therapy can reduce symptoms within 10 to 20 weeks, at 45 to 50 minutes once a week. But like any type of therapy, improvement depends on the person and the severity of the problem.

Does relational therapy work?

While no therapy type will work for everyone, some evidence suggests that this therapy can be effective. Relational therapy can help a person manage problematic relationships as well as the mental health conditions that accompany difficult relationships like depression or anxiety. This therapy type may offer benefits that are hard to measure but can be just as valuable—including feelings of higher self-worth or healthier connections with others.
