Hi I'm Matthew, a qualified CBT, integrative and psychodynamic psychotherapist. My style is warm and free of judgement. You may have problems you cannot explain to a friend or family member and need a third perspective. I work with anxiety and depression, relationships, loss, abuse, betrayal, self-esteem, anger, or those who are stuck. Improvement comes from insight, understanding and acceptance but also from stepwise, practical change. If requested I can work in a more active and future focused way with the current advice, exercises and activities supported by the evidence base.

I work with individuals and couples, helping them find ways to live a more fulfilled and satisfying life. Over time, we develop ways of behaving, thinking and feeling that work well enough to get by, but sometimes get ‘stuck’; I’m trained and experienced in finding and understanding those patterns and, without judgement, getting to the heart of how to put things right. I’ve worked in private practice, charities and the NHS with a range of individual issues, particularly depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress and historical trauma; couples work includes relationship breakdown, affairs, communication and conflict challenges.

I offer confidential and creative psychotherapy to individuals and couples. I work worldwide using Zoom, and in-person in London, UK. My clients usually arrive to work through a difficulty – including anxiety and depression, situations with relationships and sex, issues with alcohol or drugs, loss, recent or historic abuse, betrayal, self-esteem, anger, or a sense of being directionless or stuck. I respect the urgency of the situation – the need to find a way through – and the need for that way to be sustainable and authentic to who you are.

If you’re here, it’s likely that you are looking for some support with a problem you are currently experiencing. This is a big first step as it suggests you are ready or getting ready for some kind of change. I aim to provide my clients with a safe &confidential space where we can explore any difficult feelings you might be experiencing. Just the having an awareness of yourself & the issues at hand can offer you clarity which can be incredibly empowering. Clients have previously described therapy as having all the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle & needing some help fitting the pieces together.

Whatever is going on for you right now is important. I'm a warm, welcoming therapist who will make you feel listened to, understood and supported. You may be feeling anxious, depressed or stuck. You can learn some helpful strategies from the very first session to support you while we work out and start to resolve what is causing you to feel that way. Our sessions will be based on what works best for you, drawing on different approaches to meet your needs: e.g. psychodynamic therapy for behaviours rooted in the past; Rewind therapy for trauma; humanistic to work on your identity and sense of fulfilment.

Often people find that painful experiences and relationships in their past mean that things in the present can be complicated and sometimes hard to bear. They affect how we feel about ourselves, how we feel about the world and how we relate to other people we encounter.  If we work together we’ll explore what brought you to therapy now and think together about where the difficulties in your present might have come from. I will listen very carefully to you in order to appreciate what you are feeling so that we can begin to see how you might find a greater freedom in your life.

You might be coming to therapy because there is a specific situation or issue, that is causing you distress, and leaving you feeling conflicted, or overwhelmed. Or you might come to therapy because you have a sense that your life isn't working out the way that you'd hoped, perhaps there is something missing that you can't put your finger on or put words to. These difficulties could be linked to the way that you see yourself or to patterns in relationships that stop you getting what you want from life. Many difficulties stem not from feelings themselves, but the way that we've learned to manage those feelings or the way we think about those feelings. Therapy provides a safe space to think together about the issues that you face. It is very much a two-way relationship, in which we work together to understand what the underlying difficulties are. We all have a story inside our heads about who we are and who the world is and that story affects how we interpret what is happening in the here and now. Understanding this story can help you to react to the present moment more creatively and with more of a sense of choice.

I have worked in the NHS previously and have therefore worked with mental health ranging from Personality Disorders to Depression. Working independently with my own practice has enabled a wider range of clients including working with eating habits, OCD and low mood. I truly believe that having some space to discuss what is going on for you makes a big difference and I will work with you on whatever issue you are bringing to the session. I have also trained in couples therapy so I am able to offer this as well as individual sessions. I offer weekday appointments, evening sessions on Wednesdays as well as virtual on a Monday evening.

Hello and welcome to my profile page. I am a UKCP-registered clinical psychotherapist offering short and long-term therapy in Surrey and London. Most of my work is with clients experiencing depression, low mood or anxiety. I understand that the process of therapy may appear daunting and that the first steps take a lot of courage. I also believe we all possess the capacity to make new meaning of our lives and experiences to ease any distress we may experience.

There are many reasons why people experience emotional challenges, upsets, or dissatisfaction. It could be due to feeling overwhelmed by situations out of our control, being trapped in unproductive patterns or unsatisfying relationships, or simply feeling that things are not quite right in life. Whether you are faced with an emotional storm or a sense of stagnation, therapy provides a safe space for exploring your situation and building resources for moving forward. Through the therapy process, people get to know themselves better, which then guides them in making meaningful choices long after the work has ended.

How does therapy for infidelity work?

A skilled infidelity therapist will provide a safe space for clients to communicate their feelings and concerns. The goal is to be completely honest about what led to the cheating and how it has affected the entire family to prevent it from recurring in the future. The therapist will help the clients work on rebuilding mutual trust and respect and developing better communication and conflict-resolution skills. If the goal is to remain a couple, clients will learn the “danger signs” for their specific relationship, and they will make a renewed commitment to be faithful.

How long does therapy for infidelity take?

Recovery from infidelity can take time, and it can vary from person to person. Generally, a therapist will want to see the clients at least once a week for around six months. Then the sessions can be arranged as needed, depending on the clients’ individual needs. While therapy may end or shift to an as-needed basis, it can take up to two years or more for some clients to fully recover from infidelity.

How does therapy help the partner who was cheated on?

When a client discovers their partner’s infidelity, their trust in the relationship and in the life they had together may be shattered. They often experience mental health symptoms, such as anxiety, depression, grief, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). They don’t always want to stay in the relationship; they may feel ambivalent or may even want to leave. Therapy gives these clients a safe and healthy way to communicate all of their complicated emotions and concerns.

How does therapy help the partner who committed infidelity?

Infidelity often occurs when one or both partners’ emotional needs are not being met in the relationship. Therapy can help this client understand why they cheated and figure out how to address those unmet needs without resorting to infidelity in the future. This can lessen (but not entirely eliminate) the risk of repeated infidelity. Clients who cheat may also feel intense guilt about deceiving their partners, a sentiment that they can work through in therapy.
