As a gay man, I can understand the impact of being a minority, particularly on self-esteem and relationships, and I have a special interest in supporting other queer men navigating love and sex, in all the diverse and unconventional ways that occur.
What if you accepted every part of yourself, even those you hide from the world? What might be possible? Modern life can be challenging, with its demands, expectations and technology, but self-discovery can lead to learning, growth and a greater sense of ease. I can be your calm companion as you explore the areas of life that need attention, helping you connect with others and feel more belonging. My approach is person-centred and acknowledges how childhood experiences shape our adulthood, so that therapy will partly involve coming to terms with the past and how it affects the present.

My clinical and research interests focus on identity, attachment, trauma, and addiction, primarily in LGBTQIA+ communities.
I work with a wide range of clients, however, most clients reach out to me when they are looking to work around relationships, low mood or anxiety, and difficulties in adjusting to change. Overall, my aim is to help my clients gain insight into their struggles and find different ways of thinking, behaving, and feeling about life and their circumstances. Change can sometimes be a painful and intimidating process, but working with someone willing to walk alongside you and help you develop the skills to manage the process can certainly make the therapeutic journey a pleasant and enjoyable one.

The decision to consider therapy can provoke anxiety about opening up to a new person and can bring up other uncomfortable feelings from past experiences. While therapy can be challenging at times, an empathic, supportive and unconditional therapeutic relationship can be very healing. It is where you be fully accepted and can grow. I offer you a therapeutic relationship free from judgment, criticism and expectations where the only agenda is to support you in your process. I have extensive experience working with men issues, PTSD, anxiety, low self-esteem, relationship issues and gay issues.

A lot of the work that I have done has been focused on LGBTQIA+, GSRD and disability issues.
I am a qualified counsellor and psychotherapist working in a person-centred way. This means that no session is approached with a set agenda. The session shall be guided by what you would like to discuss. My role is to metaphorically walk alongside you as a gentle guide. I aim to provide an empathic, sincere and warm space for you to explore your emotions, find your voice and develop an understanding of what may be going on for you. I am based in Stoke-on-Trent for anybody wanting in-person sessions; however, I also offer online sessions.

Accepting, safe and non-judgemental counselling service from an LGBT+ ally - I work towards my clients sensing acceptance, warmth, and safety when joining me in sessions.
I specialise with the LGBT+ community, including their family and friends. I can offer a non-judgemental, gentle, accepting confidential space for you to share your issues and concerns, knowing you will not be rejected or discriminated against. I have lived experience of transgender identities, as my son is transgender. I have witnessed the high mental health conditions, suicidal ideation, including self-harm, and loss faced by LGBT+ individuals that I have counselled, along with the hurdles my son has encountered during his transition. I would like to walk with you along your pathway, and consider myself privileged to do so.

I specialise in supporting people from the LGBT+ community and have experience of working for organisations that offer LGBT+ therapy.
I work as an integrative psychotherapist. Therapy offers you a space to think about where you are in your life and where you’d like to be. I believe that therapy can help you live a more authentic and meaningful life. I offer a warm and supportive space where you can share what has brought you to therapy. People come to therapy for all sorts of reasons; all are valid. Perhaps you are feeling depressed, anxious, angry, stuck or suffering from low self-esteem. You might be struggling with your sexuality or gender identity. Perhaps you are feeling dissatisfied with your relationships with friends, partners or work colleagues.

I have always had a special interest in working with the LGBTQ+ community.
It's good to talk, but it’s better to be listened to. Carving out the space to focus on ourselves has never been more challenging. Psychotherapy is the chance to do exactly that, a place to build a relationship to safely explore where you are at and where you want to be. I am dedicated to helping you find ways forward that feel positive. I aim to support you in making decisions and to explore new possibilities where sometimes we find ourselves stuck in the same old patterns. I aim to instil confidence and help manage feelings of anxiety or low mood and to imagine a new way forward.

My approach is transdiagnostic, bringing an awareness to your unique situation, both its troubles and strengths.
I offer a safe and confidential space and a therapeutic relationship to explore what's pushing you down or holding you back, to help you move forward from difficult experiences, and to gain more freedom, ease, and creativity in your life. As a UKCP accredited integrative therapist with a background in psychology obtained in the US, I hold a balance between different theories and therapy approaches in line with your needs. Where appropriate, we can integrate EMDR to help you process trauma and stuck experiences, within a holding therapeutic relationship. I work with individuals and with LGBTQ couples both short-term and longer term.

I am an LGBTQ+ member, and enthusiastic ally for other queer folk.
I am person-centred therapist with experience in supporting people going through a range of confusion and distress. This can include: anxiety and stress, family and relationship difficulties, sexuality and gender identity, low mood, loss, feeling stuck, and self esteem. Therapy can hopefully offer you a space to explore and connect with your true self. A reconnecting which in itself often helps to reduce tension and anxiety. We will work together with whatever you bring to therapy and gently explore your individual process as we go. I work online and outdoors (Fermanagh, NI).

Hi, I'm Rachel. I am a psychosexual and relationship therapist. I work with people from all backgrounds and walks of life, although most often I work with clients who fall into the category of gender, sexuality or relationship diverse (GSRD), whether that means someone is kinky, polyamorous, a sex worker, queer (or a combination!). I work with people on a wide variety of issues: I see couples who want to work on improving communication in their relationship; I see individuals who are struggling to identify what they want sexually; I see people who want a space to process their feelings more generally.

All are welcome, however I have particular experience in working with young adults, and those experiencing change as a result of significant life shift (bereavement, a new job, leaving home, the end of a relationship), and how that relates to new identities, confidence, autonomy and relationships . I see our minds and emotions as deeply connected to our bodies, our environments and our lived experiences, and bring a whole life attitude to my counselling work. I am LGBTQIA+ friendly, and experienced with neurodivergence.

LGBTQ+ Counsellors

Do LGBTQ-affirmative therapists receive special training?

Yes. Many therapists who practice LGBTQ-affirmative therapy have completed specialised training, either during their degree programme or as continuing education, to learn the core principles of affirmative therapy and how to best support their LGBTQ clients; some have received certifications in LGBTQ-affirmative therapy. Prospective clients should inquire as to a clinician’s background and training to ensure a good fit.

Why might I want to see an LGBTQ-affirming or LGBTQ-friendly therapist?

Queer and gender-non-conforming individuals frequently experience bias and marginalisation in day-to-day life. Working with a therapist who understands these unique challenges, as well as accepts and affirms their identity, can help LGBTQ clients feel safe and supported during therapy—allowing them to better navigate their relationships, mental health, and anything else that they wish to explore during therapy. It is important to note that many therapists can be effective in their work with LGBTQ+ individuals, even in the absence of specific training or background knowledge. The most important component in therapy is the alliance between therapist and client, and this alliance can exist between individuals with very different backgrounds.

How can I find an LGBTQ-friendly therapist?

You may wish to inquire about a therapist’s expertise with your specific challenges or concerns—depression, for example, or relationship strife—as well as their past experiences treating LGBTQ+ clients. Prospective clients may also ask whether a therapist has obtained additional training and/or certification in LGBTQ-affirmative techniques.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience with LGBTQ issues?

Prospective clients should feel empowered to directly ask therapists whether they have received training or been certified in LGBTQ-affirming therapy; competent therapists will be happy to explain their educational background and preferred approach(es) to help a client find the best match for them. Clients may also wish to ask how a therapist has treated clients with their particular challenges in the past and what they expect treatment to look like.

Are all the therapists listed in the LGBTQ directory themselves members of the LGBTQ community?

While therapists may choose to disclose their sexual orientation or gender identity in their profiles, the LGBTQ directory features not only those who have shared this information but also those who assert specialised training or experience in providing support to queer individuals, couples or families.
