I have worked with many different people - with different needs - from people recovering from addiction(s), people living with feelings of depression and anxiety, neurodivergent folks, to those coping with bereavement and people dealing with abuse, violence and trauma. I'm especially passionate about working with people with traumatic life experiences and those from the LGBTQ+ community. I am a cisgender bisexual and queer woman and I use she/her pronouns. I work with an open-mindset and am poly/kink/bsdm aware. I work in a gender affirming way. I pride myself on being warm, friendly and down-to-earth.

Here, you will find a therapy space that is empathic and confidential, where you can explore your thoughts and feelings, experiences, and relationships (with yourself and others). By developing a deeper understanding of ourselves and the world around us, we become empowered in our choices and can seek a life that is more meaningful, connected, and fulfilling. In our first session, we will start by exploring what’s brought you to therapy and your hopes for working together. This will give us the chance to get to know each other and to see if we can form a relationship that is supportive and therapeutic for you.

Our bodies are very good at storing our feelings. But sometimes, this means our emotions can get stuck leading our nervous systems to freeze or shut down. This can look like feeling ‘numb’, hopeless or depressed. For other people, they may feel at the mercy of their emotions, often unintentionally reacting and feeling out of control. Other people may have learnt handy ways of managing emotions by focusing on the needs of others, trying to look after the people around them. More recently, this has been recognised as a 'fawn' response - a way of coping in moments of possible threat or danger.

My therapeutic approach is relationally based, grounded in psychoanalytic and humanistic traditions, and informed by developmental psychology, neuroscience, and psychosomatic thinking. This broad theoretical base enables me to use what feels fitting from different perspectives and work with each client according to their need. I consider psychotherapy to be an artful process; arts theories and practices underpin my understanding of how new thinking arises - that is, how change is generated through the creative-relational engagement of client and practitioner.

Feminist Counsellors
How does feminist therapy work?
Feminist therapy sessions are not only personal but often cultural or political in nature, as the approach is based on the belief that people are affected by, and often struggle with, cultural and societal norms and biases, and need to move beyond those external pressures or stressors to tap their own confidence and engage more fully in their own identity. Sessions may therefore include discussions of sexism, diversity, and gender issues and talk of steps toward greater empowerment for patients who believe they have been silenced and seek to raise their voices.
What are examples of feminist therapy techniques?
Along with traditional talk therapy and analysis, a feminist therapist may employ techniques such as role-playing and assertiveness training to help clients build their self-esteem so that they feel they can act freely, and not based on cultural expectations or gender roles dictated by others. A feminist therapist may also engage in bibliotherapy, offering suggested readings on gender identity or social power inequities as they work toward viewing mental-health concerns through a broad cultural lens before focusing on how they affect the individual. Somatic therapy techniques, with an emphasis on body awareness, self-compassion, and mindfulness practices are also often part of feminist therapist practice.
How long does feminist therapy last?
As with most forms of talk therapy, there is no set duration or end point for feminist therapy; people who believe that they are making progress typically continue until they feel they’ve addressed the issues that had been holding them back. It may take some time to become comfortable discussing personal issues, but once a client feels they can do so, they could expect therapy to last for a number of months, typically including at least 12 sessions.
Does feminist therapy work?
As a relatively recent therapeutic technique, there is not yet a body of evidence proving the efficacy of feminist therapy. However, the approach is based on proven core principles of talk therapy, with a particular emphasis on developing a therapeutic relationship based on equality and authentic connection between therapist and client and discovering and building on clients’ personal strengths to help them gain a greater sense of personal power and agency.
