Do you feel despair or a growing distance in your relationship no matter what you do? Are you struggling to communicate with your partner? My clients often tell me they miss warmth & affection and wish they could turn back the clock to happier times. Perhaps your partner had an affair and you're both scared and don't know what to do now. Either way, one thing's for sure: you’re desperate for some relief. It might be hard to imagine your relationship could be full of fun and laughter again but this has happened with my clients. Together we can move you from anxiety and stuckness to feeling happy again.

I work with warmth and integrity, to build a confidential empathic relationship, to enable therapeutic change, empowering clients to express feelings and bring clarity to experiences.
Perhaps you are finding life difficult at the moment and you would value help to find your way through being 'stuck'. Life can sometimes lead to emotional difficulties, feelings of stress, which affect our relationships or work. Counselling offers the opportunity to talk through your thoughts and feelings, helping you identify, explore and understand what doesn’t feel right within. The issues you are facing might be leading to low self-esteem, confusion, depression, addiction, suicidal thoughts or self-harm. Counselling can help you develop internal resources, and alternative ways of thinking to help you move forward in your life.

Love, sex and personal relationships are the place where we store our hopes, our fears and our vulnerabilities. When our connection with ourselves and others is going well it can feel transformative, but when it isn’t it can be extremely distressing. I offer a non-judgemental integrative approach to relationship and psychosexual therapy to work best with your circumstance, whatever they are, whether single, in a couple or open/polyamorous relationships. Troubled relationships, arguing, erection issues, loss of desire, anxiety, painful sex, vaginismus, shame about porn use or kinks, communication problems. This can all change.

I help people with issues which affect everyday life - eg, low mood or self esteem, anxiety, depression, intrusive thoughts, relationship issues, communication, conflict resolution.
Do you feel like you're going round and round with a problem - maybe with a relationship or how you see yourself? Maybe you don't know how you want things to be, or you know what you want but can't work out how to do it, or don't have the courage to follow through? Are you constantly thinking about a particular person and wishing the situation, or one of you, could be different? Are you worried friends/family are tired of hearing about your problems? Are you feeling anxious, angry, rejected, or unimportant? Whatever your issues, I can help you talk about and process them, find solutions, and feel more at ease with yourself.

I understand that the decision to start therapy is rarely made lightly, and taking that first step can feel overwhelming. You may be feeling apprehensive, anxious, and sceptical about sharing your innermost thoughts and emotions with a stranger. It takes immense courage to be vulnerable and talk about the difficulties you are experiencing, and I want you to know that I fully appreciate and respect your decision to seek help. You might be facing a specific problem that you want to address, such as relationship issues, anxiety. Alternatively, you may have a sense that something in your life is not quite right, but cannot identify it.

At the heart of how I work is to build a safe and trusting therapeutic relationship through attunement to your experience of the world, and how this emerges in the present.
Hi, I am Clare, a compassionate, warm, friendly, and professional integrative relational psychotherapist. I work alongside clients in a respectful, empowering, non-judgemental way, to deepen understanding, identify choices and enable change. I believe that our early relationships and experiences have a profound impact on how we feel and behave, and on what we believe about ourselves and the world around us. Having counselling will enable you to rediscover yourself in a safe place, where you can go at your own pace and allow yourself to release your true emotions that you may have locked away but are causing anxiety or distress.

Couples Counselling

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
