I believe in the power of opening up, and while I will draw on theory and knowledge to support each individual client, I am led by the client and their individual needs. An ideal client is someone who wishes to build a therapeutic space alongside me, allowing me to facilitate safety and build trust. I am interested in helping others to develop personal growth and insight through the relational dynamics they experience.

You may feel something is “off” or even unreal in the way you experience your interpersonal relationships, or in the way the world responds to you. You may be looking for relief from distressing thoughts or worries. You may be at a crossroads and unsure of your next steps. You may be looking to understand or heal from something that happened to you and the effects it had.

We all experience difficulties at one time or another. It could be that our relationships aren’t all we'd like them to be. Or perhaps we feel anxious, depressed, lonely, or we’re grieving a loss. Perhaps we behave in ways that we'd rather not, or that we don't understand. Or maybe life has lost its meaning, we've lost our sense of direction, feel stuck, or just don't know who we are any more. Counselling offers a safe, confidential space in which to explore such issues in relationship with someone who is skilled, non-judgemental, and really there for you. A space in which to come to terms with things, and allow them to change.

You might be experiencing distressing experiences which attract various diagnoses/ labels, but I wouldn’t say you’re ‘disordered’. I'm more interested in understanding how these symptoms communicate what's happened to you and how you think psychotherapy can help you progress and create a meaningful life for yourself. After all, we wouldn't blame a flower for not growing, we would look at whether the environment was nurturing. My perspective is informed by how our environment/culture/family affects us, using contemporary ideas from the 'power threat meaning' framework, the 'mad in the UK/USA' movements, and a 'disorder for everyone'.

I work with both individuals and couples. The skill-sets and experience I offer draw off a variety of professional trainings such as Internal Family System (IFS) and Intimacy from the Inside Out (IFIO) . These approaches are known to bring about the transformative healing qualities and resources that exist inside people. These are therapies that makes difficult experiences possible, such as: trauma, phobia or anxiety. I am here to help people better relate with what humans experience, I’ve witnessed and learned this is evidently possible through therapy.

People come to counselling for many different reasons. It’s a brave first step to make; to decide that you might need or want help processing your thoughts and feelings with another person. Counselling can often help us to understand ourselves better; reframe the way we experience ourselves and help us to open up to the possibility of change. As a counsellor, my focus is on the relationship that is co-created in a safe, non-judgemental space with clients. I believe that once we feel that we are being listened to and heard by another we can express our authentic self; the parts of us that may be hidden in everyday life.

At times of feeling low or anxious we often think, “what’s the point of trying it won’t make any difference”, leading to feelings of depression, sadness, fear and tearfulness. This then leads to changes in our behaviour such as withdrawing from others or staying in bed as we mull things over in our heads which makes us feel worse. Additionally, past trauma issues can often leave us feeling overwhelmed or with experiences of flashbacks and nightmares. Relationship issues left unresolved often leave us with a sense of helplessness and relationship breakdown leave us feel confused. Does this sound familiar to you?

I am an accredited BACP counsellor who is in the process of seeking accreditation as a psychotherapist. I have over 700 hours of clinical experience and work part time for a charity specialising in eating disorders, which works with the NHS. As well as that I am in private practice and work with a range of mental health issues. If you have happened upon this then you might have been struggling with something life has thrown at you, or you are simply feeling distress for seemingly no apparent reason. I’m sorry if this is the case. But you have taken an important step towards asking for help, which is commendable as well as daunting.

Trauma and PTSD Counsellors
When should I seek treatment for trauma?
Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.
How long does trauma therapy take?
Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.
What happens if trauma is left untreated?
Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.
Can PTSD come back after treatment?
It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
