As it is important to find a counsellor who is the right fit for you.
Hi I'm Adam. I guess your searching these pages in the hope to find someone to connect with so you can feel comfortable enough to be honest and open about some of the struggles you may be experiencing. I am non-judgmental in my approach and will help you find your own strengths. I have lived experience of addiction which has given me a different outlook towards life. I am a firm believer that people can change and better themselves. Through my own experiences I want to help others like myself who do not know where to turn to. I find it a privilege to support people through their struggles and journey.

During the first session we will identify problems that are causing you pain and unhappiness.
Ex military, now multi skilled therapist. The military provided me with valuable insights and experiences. Vast exposure, witnessing various traumas and mental health impacts highlighted the importance of mental health suport and the benefit of it to others. Having supported others for years through issues such as suicide, abuse, sexual vilence, domestic violence, depression, anxiety, selfharm, neglect, relational conflict, PTSD and the impacts of bereavement I wanted to continue similar support throughy therapy.

This is such a brave thing to do, please have trust in yourself and let this be the first step to a life of trust, value and authenticity.
Do you struggle with the voice inside your head that tells you you're stupid, ugly, pretending to be someone you're not? Do you want to change this voice?. Through person-centred therapy, working with the issues my children were mirroring for me and offering myself compassion, working with my neurodivergence instead of rejecting it and shaming myself I managed to heal this and recover from narcissistic relationships. This is your time, I truly believe you can reach your full potential like I did with the conditions my own therapist provided, just like a flower I bloomed, you can too!

In the first session I give details about how counselling works, and explore what it is you are looking for in counselling, to help you decide what's a good way forward for you.
To be listened to and accepted for where you are in your life is important. From practicing as a person centred counsellor for over 10 years, I believe that a non-judgemental and compassionate approach is key for healing and making the changes you want in your life. This is especially so after socially isolating ourselves in recent times. Alongside listening, I offer counselling tools when needed to help. If you prefer, we can chat initially about counselling via mobile or email.

I know how fragile our thoughts and feelings are and trusting them with someone new can be daunting.
Finding a therapist who you feel really "gets you" is not always easy and can take time. From personal experience I know how invaluable therapy can be when you share your vulnerabilities and receive compassion without judgement in return. Whatever is bringing you to counselling at this time in your life, I would offer you an open and honest space to share your feelings without fear of rejection. I would be privileged to help in your search for the answers that you are looking for to move forward from where you are now, and in doing so help you feel more at peace within yourself.

Taking the first leap of faith into therapy isn't easy.
Do you ever feel like no matter what you do, you're just not quite good enough? Maybe it feels more extreme and often you feel like you hate yourself? Perhaps outwardly you are a confident and successful person but inwardly something just doesn't feel right? Low self-esteem can show up in various different ways - sometimes it's hard to even identify. Low self-esteem often pairs up with anxiety and/or depression. Together we can set achievable goals and work together to make sustainable and lasting changes for life.

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognise and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioural activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
