My specializations include: anxiety, depression, self-esteem, substance use, men's issues, grief, career guidance, anger management, behavioural issues, sexual addiction, ADHD, chronic pain, divorce, and alcohol use.
Disconnected. Broken. Hopeless. Powerless. Stuck. Many men tell me this is how they feel in our first session. Taking the first step to make change in your life and accept support can sometimes feel the most challenging and overwhelming. As a male therapist, I have learned that working with men requires a focus on practical solutions, a safe and comfortable environment, a therapist who understands the unique personal and societal challenges men face, an emphasis on self-compassion and self-acceptance, and a willingness to address underlying issues. Book a free 20-minute consultation. Click the "website" button to start your journey.

I specialize in the treatment of relationships, communication, intimacy, sexuality, addiction & mental health.
My theory of change is founded on the premise that healing and growth can emerge through nurturing interpersonal connections. I stand by the belief that we are relational beings, meaning that our interactions with others influence our mood, sense of self, and well-being. Through sessions, whether I work with you or your relationship, I facilitate dynamic interventions to create new bonding moments that foster cognitive awareness, emotional regulation, and behavioural changes. As a therapist, my goal is to help you shift from a place of reactiveness and hopelessness to a place of communication and connection.

As a man, emotions and sharing them often create barriers for relationships with others and with ourselves. Support around emotional awareness for men is important to help build a better connection with all aspects of our lives. Being able to share and communicate who we "really" are is vital to a fulfilling life. I help men deal with emotional awareness. Supporting men to work through their own emotional histories and how that effects them daily is the key to connecting to your true "self". We need to address issues, like Trauma, Addiction and Shame, to help you understand the roots of emotional identity and its effects today.

Many of my clients have struggled with severe anxiety or depression as well as trauma, addiction, relationship/attachment issues, and abuse.
I believe it takes a great deal of courage and self-regard for someone to say they need help and reaching out is a powerful (albeit terrifying) first step towards positive change. I understand addressing personal concerns is not a perfect process and will include setbacks, but healing through past/present issues is like writing a book: you have to go through a few drafts before you're satisfied with the result. My approach is to meet you in your current stage of life and help identify personal strengths you can use as needed. You can expect a warm, empathetic approach with questions and comments about the present issue.

My specialties include trauma, addiction, domestic and (childhood) sexual violence, grief, depression, sexuality, and relationship issues.
My approach to psychotherapy is deeply rooted in feminist and structural analyses that contextualize individual "problems" in our social environments. My therapeutic orientation is comprised of an eclectic mix of theoretical models that guide my work, including emotion focused therapy, psychodynamic therapy, and somatic therapy. While I don't practice exclusively from one perspective, I believe that it is my role to be constantly assessing whether or not the work we are doing appears to be helping you to achieve your therapeutic goals. I offer psychological services under the supervision of Dr. Leigh Karos, C. Psych.

What is the best therapy for addiction?

Addiction treatment will be tailored to the individual. People seeking help for addiction—whether with a psychotherapist, in an outpatient clinic, or in a residential program—should expect to engage in multiple types of treatments, sometimes including medication. For anyone recovering from addiction, avoiding situations in which one has typically used a substance is essential, as is the support of close connections. Since substance use disorders tend to co-occur with underlying mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression, those must also be addressed as part of any recovery plan.

How long does therapy for addiction take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from addiction. Patients and their families should expect the work to last several months, if not longer. Residential treatment programs may be based on a stay of 30, 60, or 90 days, with continuing work after release, but only about 1 percent of people are treated in such facilities. Ceasing use is just the first step; therapy to help maintain abstinence and effect behavior change must follow. The process of recovery, neuroscience has shown, involves brain cells recovering the capacity to respond to natural sources of reward and restore control over the impulse to use. Another definition of recovery is restoring voluntary control over one’s substance use and retaking all of one’s previous responsibilities.

How effective is drug addiction treatment?

Substance use disorders are treatable and remission is achievable for many who seek recovery; by some estimates, more than three-quarters of people who become addicted to alcohol or drugs recover. But that success rarely occurs quickly or on a set timeline; relapse is not only common, but many therapists and clinicians view it as a normal part of the process—not always a sign that a person has returned to addiction, but a signal that their treatment should be adjusted to help them regain control. Overall, research suggests, five years after the end of substance use, one’s risk of relapse is no greater than that of others who had not faced addiction. Other experts believe that complete abstinence is not the only measure of recovery, and that, through effective treatment, many people can learn to control their use.

How can you get addiction treatment for someone?

The most important factor in recovery from addiction is widely understood to be an individual’s commitment to change. For that reason,“interventions” in which friends and family gather to urge or force someone to begin immediate treatment often backfire; even when such efforts do lead someone to begin treatment, they may be less likely to stay than those who are self-driven. Still, family members can play an important role in supporting an individual who seeks help and can take part in family therapy as one element of a loved one’s treatment.
