Are you a helping professional and finding it increasingly challenging to emotionally connect and show up for yourself & loved ones, as well as for your patients & coworkers? Perhaps your family & friends say “you’re just not the same, you’re not like yourself”, as you have become withdrawn, irritable, angry or even aggressive. Do you find that what used to be a rewarding work experience is becoming draining, depleting, and overwhelming? If you have aches and pains, startle easily, or find it hard to concentrate and sleep, you might be wondering, why is this happening and what can I do to overcome this? I'm so glad you're here!

If you've experienced sexual abuse (rape, childhood sexual abuse, harassment) it's likely you noticed changes in how you think, feel and act. Maybe you believe that you deserve what happened or that there was something you should have done to stop it. You may see the world as a dangerous place and people as untrustworthy. You're likely on edge, hypervigilant and feel out of control of your emotions - or maybe you don't feel them at all. You can't sleep, relationships are difficult, you feel haunted by your memories, sex and intimacy aren't as they used to be, and it feels like nothing you've tried works. This is trauma.

My intention for you, as a therapist, is to be with you with compassion and skill to help you through life's difficult times and to help you reach your greater potential. We will work together, in a supportive environment, to increase resilience and wisdom so you can be better able to access, communicate and actualize your inner needs. Most of the clients I see are burdened by anxiety, depression, relationship problems and/or trauma. I have resources and strategies that address these all too common concerns.

I believe therapy should be practical and actionable to help you get the best results and achieve positive lasting change as quickly as possible. As a client-centered therapist, I work collaboratively and offer an individualized approach to meet clients where they're at. My work is inspired by the science of interpersonal neurobiology, thus I provide education about human behaviour and brain functioning to help clients make sense of their difficulties and see their challenges from a normalizing view. Many clients find this information to be helpful, hopeful, and empowering, as it gives us a roadmap for resolving their issues.

I would like to invite you into a non-judgmental, nurturing, and anti-oppressive space, where we can work together to address the challenges in your life. Sometimes life can bring hardship and unexpected events, which can produce negative feelings and emotions. Some of these challenges require less support to process and work through, while others may take longer and require more frequent support to overcome. As your therapist, my goal is to understand you, your needs, and guide you to cope with or overcome the difficulties interfering with your everyday life.

In my work as a Registered Psychotherapist and Clinical Supervisor, I work to create a space that is thoughtful, warm and connected. Together we’ll dig deep to explore underlying thoughts, feelings and behaviours to better learn what’s going on, where you might be getting stuck and pathways to move forward. I aim to help you live with a greater sense of authenticity, ease and meaning. I bring a relational, trauma-informed and attachment-based lens to my work.

I work collaboratively and sensitively with whatever issues you feel ready to bring forward. This could include relationship challenges, emotional reactivity, difficulties getting needs met, conflict aversion, low self-worth, anxiety, depression and trauma. We may spend time exploring past relationships, but our focus may also remain on present-day experiences. Such work can help you build self-understanding, self-compassion and emotional tolerance, to name a few things. It can help clarify thinking and enhance problem-solving. I believe we can start pretty much anywhere, in any session, and eventually get to where we need to go.

I've spent years not only working as an entrepreneur, but working with entrepreneurs and driven people. I understand that although the chase is exciting, it can be exhausting, lonely and feel endless. Let's work together so you don't have to be "that bad" or join that stat. I help you manage your life so you can better manage your work.

How effective is treatment for insomnia?

The most effective treatments for insomnia are behavioral techniques that reduce anxiety, including anxiety about falling asleep, and allow the body’s natural cycles to be recalibrated. The most common treatment is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), which researchers have found to be more useful than medication, with rates of success as high as 80 percent.

Are there specific medications for sleep problems?

There are many medications, both over-the-counter and prescription that treat sleep problems. Supplements such as melatonin are popular and may help, though there is little evidence that it is more effective than a placebo. Prescription medications such as zolpidem are sometimes prescribed.

Are there natural treatments for sleep problems?

There are many natural treatments for everyday sleep problems. Reducing blue-light emitting screens, setting a regular bedtime, regular exercise, reducing caffeine and nicotine consumption, and keeping the bedroom dark and cool at night are all lifestyle changes that can help those who struggle with sleep but may not reach the level of an insomnia diagnosis.

What’s the difference between having trouble falling asleep and insomnia?

Life events, stress, and anxiety can lead to sleepless nights for everyone from time to time. To be diagnosed with insomnia, a patient must experience trouble falling asleep, trouble remaining asleep, waking up too early, or non-restorative sleep at least three nights per week for at least one month. Sleep problems affect one-third to one-half of the population, while chronic insomnia affects about 10 to 15 percent of people.
