Opening up is difficult. Often we're told to deal with it, or that things will get better. Maybe you’re going through a transition, feeling overwhelmed, tired, or stuck. Maybe you’ve been feeling an emotion you’ve been told you’re not supposed to feel. Navigating these conflicting thoughts and feelings can be a lot to manage, but you do not have to manage them alone. Maybe you feel like your problems are too big or too small. Maybe you feel like something is just a passing thought and is not worth bringing up. When working with me, nothing is off the table – if it’s important to you, then it is important to me.

“Whether we’re overcoming adversity, surviving trauma or dealing with stress or anxiety, having a sense of purpose, meaning, and perspective in our lives allows us to develop understanding and move forward. Without purpose, meaning and perspective, it is easy to lose hope, numb our emotions or become overwhelmed by our circumstances. We feel reduced, less capable, and lose in the face of struggle. The heart of spirituality is connection. When we believe in that inextricable connection, we don’t feel alone.” – Brene Brown

Change, growth, challenges, and transitions are inevitable, unavoidable, and often completely unexpected in life resulting in small traumas that can still cause significant distress in daily functioning. A part of being human involves having perceived “demons” in our closets or events we experienced in our past or childhood that may impact our present-day functioning. You may have unintentionally learned that repressing or not talking about these small traumas is the “appropriate” way to cope but it may not be working resulting in you feeling overwhelmed, stressed, upset, and like you are spinning out of control.

Conflicts in relationships are inevitable! It’s how we adapt & overcome them that makes the difference. These conflicts can be circumstantial or rooted in anxieties from the past and may not look like your typical conflict. Perhaps you find yourself experiencing the same anxious thoughts or maybe you're stuck in the same negative patterns that you can't seem to break as a couple. Interpersonal and internal conflict can leave us feeling stuck, confused, stressed, overwhelmed, or depressed. Most importantly, recognizing that fear is an emotion we all experience and discovering how fear operates for you is okay to explore.

An intriguing fact: We are wired for emotional connection. Yet, do you find that you and your partner or family member always get into misunderstandings and conflict? Are you hurting from the wounds of betrayal, abandonment, abuse, leaving you feeling angry, lonely, and struggling to trust others? There is hope! I understand how individuals, families and couples fall into patterns that are hurtful, and feel stuck. I help clients gain an understanding of their patterns of communication; help them heal relational wounds; give them tools to shift into a more skilful, calm, satisfying feeling within themselves and their relationships.

On the good days, you are unsure if you really need any help. You think it will pass. But on the difficult days, you find yourself here. You are tired and overwhelmed. Your mood is low, and your patience is short. Your relationships feel fragile, and your resilience is waning. Adding one more to-do item to your list seems impossible. Maybe even indulgent. You can ignore your struggle, and maybe tomorrow will be a better day. Or, you can find yourself the support you deserve and know that it will be. You do not have to do this alone.

Gottman Method Counsellors

How does the Gottman method work?

One of the core doctrines of the Gottman method is that negative emotions hurt relationships about five times more than positive emotions help them. Thus, couples require five times more positive interactions than negative interactions with each other. The therapist will guide clients on how to improve communication and understanding of each other to manage conflict and have their emotional needs met. The therapist will also advise couples on how to repair relations with each other when conflict arises, and therefore avoid lasting damage.

Is the Gottman method evidence-based?

Yes, this method is an evidence-based approach to couples therapy. The method is based on more than 40 years of research by Drs. John and Julie Gottman, the psychologists who developed the method. The Gottmans analysed decades of data to draw conclusions about what types of interactions are likely to lead to specific results, and which interventions are most likely to lead to success. Studies have found that this approach leads to improvements in relationship satisfaction, intimacy, communication skills, and a lower rate of divorce.

How long does the Gottman method take?

The duration of treatment depends on the specific challenges clients face. Sessions are typically 60 to 90 minutes long, and an average course of treatment is around 10 sessions. In some cases, such as for couples dealing with a critical problem, the therapist will suggest an intensive course of treatment, with daily sessions over the first two to four days. Treatment is complete when the couple is satisfied and has met the goals they’ve set, and when the therapist believes they have the skills to continue on their own.

Is the Gottman method effective?

Through the Gottman method, couples can achieve changes that are real and sustainable. This treatment has been used for more than 40 years; the method is supported by empirical research, including randomised controlled trials that have demonstrated effectiveness in improving relationship outcomes for couples. Like any talk therapy, success or failure depends in large part on how committed the clients are to making positive changes and working toward results.
