We will establish your goals for both therapy in general and for each session, whether you're an individual, a couple or a family.
Investing in understanding yourself — what makes you unique, what makes you strong, and how you may hold yourself back — is one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself. Self-awareness is like a super-power — it doesn’t solve all life’s problems, but it gives you ways of navigating challenges that make you more likely land well. Whether you are looking for quick tools to help shift your mood, or longer-term support for charting a course through a major life transition, or puzzling through challenges with end-of-life, grief, family, relationships or work, I feel privileged to support your success and be and a part of your story.

I am a certified EFT couple, family, and individual therapist, with over 40 years of experience helping thousands of people and relationships.
I see couples in therapy who tell me they are quarrelling too much or who have drifted apart. Often, they need help with slowing down, expressing their softer feelings and understanding their partner's emotions. I also see couples whose lives have been turned upside down by an extra-marital affair and worry that there will never be trust again. I help them learn how an affair doesn't have to mean the end of a relationship. I also see individuals with anxiety, depression and trauma from childhood interfering with their present lives. Young adults and their parents see me for family therapy to improve their relationships.

I pull from cognitive behavioural therapy, internal family systems, schema therapy, the Gottman Method and the developmental model.
Seeking out therapy is not only for when you or your relationship are in a state of crisis; therapy can also be preventative when things are going well, proactive when expecting challenging life transitions and reactive when distress starts impacting your daily life. I am ready to meet you where you are in your journey and support you to explore the past, to stand with you in the present and work with you towards future well-being and goals. I believe in the importance of healthy relationships and a comprehensive approach, so welcome working with individuals, couples and families.

I mostly rely on theories of intersectionality, feminism, attachment, Internal Family Systems, EMDR, embodiment, CBT, DBT, and I am trauma informed.
My approach to therapy is practical, creative, humorous, and interactive. Engaging in therapy is a vulnerable and courageous step, and I aim to foster a comfortable, collaborative process. When the tools and skills that were previously helpful are no longer working, I support clients to cultivate new coping skills, and identify potential areas for change and/or acceptance. I am a seasoned therapist who is able to draw from a variety of modalities depending on what comes up for the client.

Family Therapy Counsellors

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
