I want to help individuals living with chronic pain create new narratives about their pain while also encouraging change in the body.
Finding a therapist can be a daunting task, especially if you are new to therapy and not sure how to find the right fit. My goal is to offer you a safe space to determine what you hope to gain from therapy and how we can best meet your needs. Originally from Dublin, I am a white settler living on Treaty 1 territory. I am a cisgender lesbian and I specialize in working with members of the LGBTQ+ community, particularly gender-questioning and transgender young people. As a queer mother, I also support other parents and would-be parents in navigating the unique challenges of making our families.

I have been helping people for over 40 years using a multifaceted approach. I work from the position of deep respect for all individuals. Presently, I use biofeedback in my practice. This allows me to assist clients with their physical, mental, and spiritual issues. I also use tools such as neuro-linguistic programming and Hypnosis. When a client’s suffering has manifested physically in her/his/their body, I often use pain-free electro acupuncture and laser therapy, taking into account the client's comfort level. It is the intention that clients will leave with a skill level that will help them create a quality life.

I work with individuals age 16+ and couples who are looking for support navigating chronic illness and complex medical issues, infertility (IVF), bereavement, anxiety, life transitions, and stress/burnout.
Life can feel impossible at times. We all know that pain in life is unavoidable, but I'd be honoured to help you carry that burden while we work towards solutions together. There is no magic wand that works for everyone, so my goal is to work with you to find what works for you specifically. I aim to create a space free of judgement where you feel supported, heard and validated. I believe in meeting people where they are at. You will do some hard work, but you won't be doing it alone. I tend to pull from self-compassion/mindfulness practices and cognitive restructuring strategies as tools that research has found to be helpful.

I provide therapy to individuals, couples and families who are struggling with chronic conditions, like allergies, chronic pain, and autoimmune disorders.
Hello and welcome. You may be in a rough season of life and your usual coping skills aren’t bringing relief. You or a loved one might be struggling with a chronic condition, like allergies, an autoimmune disorder or chronic pain. If you’ve recently received a diagnosis, you may feel overwhelmed. If you’ve been dealing with it on your own, you may feel isolated. Maybe it’s hard to believe right now, but it is possible to move from helplessness to empowerment. There may be a lot you can’t control, but let’s determine what you can. You don’t have to be fearful or anxious. Your diagnosis does not have to define you. Let me help.

Chronic Pain Counsellors

How does chronic pain therapy work?

Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?

Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophising, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioural therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?

Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
