I have advanced training in marriage and family therapy (AAMFT approved supervisor).
Are you in a long-term relationship marked with stress, anger and frustration, high conflict, difficult and disrespectful communication, sexual and intimacy problems, and ongoing emotional hurts? Are memory and attention difficulties affecting your current functioning? Perhaps you could benefit from having an expert who understand your needs and assist you in the process of changing old patterns and develop more helpful interpersonal relating skills and better cognitive health. For more than 25 years, I worked overseas and locally helping individuals and couples from different cultures solve their problems.

My expertise is BIPOC individuals in the 16 - 40+ age range navigating relationship issues, self-exploration, life and career transitions, trauma, self-esteem issues, stress, anxiety, and family conflict.
Whether it's anxiety from relationships, pressure from work, or a disconnect between your values and decisions, we all can feel lost at times. Maybe you know exactly where you desire change, or you are uncertain and don't know where to start, I'm here to help! My goal is to work alongside you to create a space for you to engage in self-discovery, process life events, unlearn unhelpful beliefs and behaviours, build coping skills, and work towards inner peace that often feels eluding. Together we can re-gain a sense of control as no matter what's led you here, I believe in the human capacity to adapt and grow with the right support.

My goal is to help you live a rich, full, meaningful life, which means learning coping skills for stressful situations, improving marriage, family, and other relationships beyond just surviving, but thriving.
When you feel all hope is lost, there is STILL hope! Vincent van Gogh said, “There may be a great fire in our soul, yet no one ever comes to warm himself at it, and the passers-by see only a wisp of smoke.” I consider my job to hear and feel with you the great fire of your soul—your struggles, feelings of hopelessness and worry, feeling controlled by your emotions and past trauma, repeating patterns of conflict, battling addiction, or fighting an inner battle that others may not fully understand or appreciate.

My journey in becoming a Marriage and Family Therapist has evolved over the last 20 plus years in the Mental Health field from a belief that there is inter-connectedness in everything we do directly impacting our mental and physical well-being.
Relationships in our lives present us with an infinite number of experiences that bring successes, challenges and everything in between. The stories that we live everyday contain relationships that form the foundation of our mental and physical well-being. There are times when we want the current stories in our life to continue and at other times we hope and need for something to change so that we can live the life we desire as an individual and in relation to others. Regardless of the challenges you are experiencing there is a way to find a path forward towards a desired story that will bring fulfillment and joy in your life.

My work experience includes a non-profit counselling centre, a family psychology practice, as well as an employee assistance program of a school board.
Hey there! My name is Jeremy and I'm glad you're looking into some mental health supports. Whether it is for yourself or for someone you know, looking into different therapy options can be overwhelming with all the options out there, so it can be helpful to have a general idea of what some of your counselling goals might be and go from there. Phone consultations are a great way to see if you might be a good fit with each other as well. I believe in everyone's ability to create changes for themselves and haven't met a client I haven't learned from yet!

My goal is to help every client thrive emotionally, psychologically, and intellectually. I am equally as interested to hear a client’s story of trauma, loss, regret, loneliness, and difficult family dynamics, as I am to listen about times filled with purpose, hope, and happiness. I pay close attention to what is said, in addition to what is left unsaid, to uncover patterns of core beliefs.

My ideal family is one that is tired of hurting each other. My ideal family has at least one family member, usually a teenager, impacted by drugs, alcohol, and process addictions like video games. The healthy part of the family is motivated by fear to use control to stop their teenager from their addictive behaviour. If control is ineffective then power struggles can develop which tear at the family power structures. My ideal family has at least one family member who learns addictions are rooted in multigerational issues, trauma, and mental illness. Families want healthy loving interconnections and not power struggles.

I work from a client centered approach as the basis for our work together. We can then decide on which of the empirically supported approaches (or more likely which combination of approaches) is the best fit for you and your situation. The basis is a non-judgmental stance to what you face and designing a tailored, you-specific, empirically supported approach to help you gain a better understanding of your situation and more adaptive ways of managing or coping. I borrow from various approaches including client-centered, Cognitive-behavioral, Acceptance and Commitment, Mindfulness-based, Emotion focused, and insight oriented.

I believe that psychology is a tool for solving problems and working through change. In my career, I have helped many people 'get unstuck', overcoming emotional difficulties and working through trauma, grief, and loss. I also regularly work with couples and families, helping with challenges including marital conflict and parenting difficulties. My approach is integrative, and tailored to each person that I meet. I draw upon a number of evidenced-based approaches, including emotion-focused therapy, psychodynamic therapy, cognitive-behavioural therapy, experiential therapy, motivational interviewing, and solution-focused therapy.

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
