Hi, I'm Roberta and I have been calling Australia 'home' for a few years. With both a Bachelor and a Master’s degree in Psychology, as well as an ongoing Graduate Diploma in Relationship Counselling, I bring a wealth of experience working with diverse populations. My professional journey has allowed me to work extensively with young children, adults facing various mental health and life challenges, women recovering from intimate partner violence, and couples seeking to improve their relationships. I strongly believe in the resilience of the human spirit and that understanding what has happened to us is the key to transformation.

I work with heterosexual, multiracial, same sex couples and individuals who are in a place of questioning or are seeking help with a specific situation or event. Couples may be wanting some "fine tuning" in specific areas of their relationship or they may be experiencing a crisis due to an infidelity or breakdown in communication and may be unsure if they can or even want to, stay together. Individuals may be ready to explore childhood issues, dealing with trauma or having an existential crisis. I teach Circle of Security an attachment based parent program for caregivers wanting to parent differently to their parents.

Relationships are tough! Add in each other's trauma and you are bouncing off everyone like you're in a jumping castle. The old adage of 'individual stuff' and 'couple/s stuff' is true. Conversations can feel like they are going around in circles or rehashing old stuff. You feel stuck. Your partner/s feels stuck. No one is moving forward. This wasn't the life you imagined when you got together. It was meant to be rainbows and fairytales, not discussions around housework, money and sex - or friends and inlaws! What if I told you that 'your stuff' is affecting the relationship? It's a big possibility. It does not have to be that way!

My role in therapy is to provide a space that is transparent, free of judgement and free of criticism to safely explore where you are, where you want to be, and whom you want to become. It is this sense of safety and trust that allows us to see ourselves clearly and allows us to break free from old subconscious habits and patterns making space to make conscious choices about our responses to triggers and situations. Many clients have described this experience as liberating and empowering, freeing them to grow and find meaning, purpose and fulfilment in life.

I'm Anita. Men's issues and relationships are particular therapeutic interest of mine. The traditional expectations of men are being questioned and, in some spheres, revised. This is leading to a growing sense of disorientation for some, and a break-down in sense of self. Relationships are central to our well-being. Break-down in communication, unresolved hurt and needs not being met are all challenges that affect us deeply and impact on other aspects of our lives. I aim to help clients understand what holds them back and why, and how they can confidently move forward in what many see as an increasingly confusing world.

My therapeutic philosophy maintains that within each and every one of us there lies an unlimited amount of potential, that we as human beings have an innate drive to work towards becoming the best possible version of ourselves and reaching our optimal “way of being”. Thus my passion is in helping guide and facilitate the personal growth and self development of people from all walks of life and assisting in the process of connection with self, as when we are aligned and connected with our true selves we are operating from a place of authenticity and this empowers us to pursue a life which is meaningful, rewarding and fulfilling.

Couples Counselling

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
