Individuals and couples who see me for therapy are typically dealing with anxiety, depression, relationship issues, a low sense of self-worth, grief, and/or trauma. They are struggling to take risks with vulnerability, to process loss, set boundaries, understand the power of no, discern safe spaces, and build trust. Many of my patients are challenged by the stories their anxiety tells them, negative self-talk, sadness that makes it difficult to effectively process their thoughts and feelings, and previous traumatic experiences or vicarious exposure to trauma.

Starting therapy is a leap of faith at a time when hope is scarce. It is an act of courage. I prioritize symptom relief and stabilization, but I believe that lasting change and growth stem from a deeper understanding of our histories, relationships, internal worlds, and motivations. I work best with people who are willing to take a risk and become curious about their own complexity. I believe social and political environments, genetic predispositions, and intergenerational histories all interact to manifest our challenges and gifts. Ideally, my clients would be open to uncovering the many unconscious forces at play in their lives.

I am a psychologist entering my twentieth year of private practice with children (ages four and up), teenagers and adults. My work with children and teenagers is both individual and parent-focused. Grounded in a clear understanding of developmental issues, I work closely with parents. Most of my clients come seeking treatment for mood, anxiety and relationship difficulties. I use a psychodynamic lens to conceptualize patient difficulties and integrate cognitive behavioral strategies to assist with symptoms and improve functioning.

I strive to create a space where clients can come and speak without fear and judgment about their greatest challenges and aspirations in a confidential environment. Do you find yourself looking in the mirror and wondering, "how did I get here?" then I might be the right fit as a therapist for you. As a professional practitioner I find that I am extremely effective with people trying to wear multiple hats in life; managing work and family, coping with chronic illness and balancing professional aspirations, trying to reclaim your sexual identity while being an engaged parent or partner.

We all face stressors in life that can become overwhelming. Feeling stuck with our own negative thoughts or anxiety about new changes; repeatedly engaging in the same fights with our partner or spouse; worrying that we cannot support our children in the way we want - these are all universal experiences. Everyone faces obstacles, but not everyone has to remain feeling helpless, hopeless, or stagnant. It is at these times when it makes the most sense to reach out for support and when therapy can be most effective.

I'm a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with experience treating adolescents and adults in a myriad of settings. In these roles, I've provided individualized therapy to support with relationship, academic, and interpersonal issues, among others. I've also done extensive social justice work with young women. In my practice, the relationship is the main healing agent in a therapeutic dynamic. I've found that clients seek largely to feel seen and heard, and that my role is to co-create a safe space for them to grow. I'm guided by the E. Dickinson quote, "I felt it shelter to speak to you."

It can be a struggle to find someone who understands you for who you are and the complexities of your experiences. We all come from different walks of life, which shape how we see the world and how the world sees us. No one's walk is without trials and tribulations, which can have traumatic impacts on our mental and physical health. Everyone deserves to be heard and understood by someone who recognizes what they've been through and can help them foster personal growth and self-confidence.

To be fully alive means to experience the whole gamut of human emotions, including the uncomfortable ones like anxiety, sadness, anger, and shame. Paradoxically, the more fully we feel our feelings, the less intense and problematic they become over time! My job is to help people develop the skills to better recognize, understand, and tolerate their feelings, and in so doing, expand their capacity for pleasurable and joyful emotions.

I am a private practitioner who has worked with children, teens and young adults in New York City for the past 10 years. Feeling heard and supported and being understood by your therapist is a critical component of mental health care. I provide compassionate and empathic care to children, teens and young adults. My clients come to me with anxiety and depressive symptoms, family dynamics issues and often while in the midst of a transition. Clients who have completed treatment leave with new coping skills, a renewed sense of confidence and fresh perspectives on their lives.

Women's Issues Therapists

How do you encourage a woman to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual may be suffering, and what effects it has on them, should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.

How can women prepare for therapy?

Women can prepare for therapy by being willing to talk about their past experiences and their private thoughts. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. Between sessions, it can be useful to write down notes about their reaction to a given event or how they felt at a particular time.

How long does therapy for women’s issues often last?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual and the challenges they face. Therapy types like Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), Prolonged exposure therapy (PET), and Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. In some cases, such as for women with eating disorders, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

How can women overcome stigma around specific challenges in order to seek therapy?

Women dealing with domestic abuse, sexual assault, eating disorders, and any other number of troubles may feel a stigma around seeking help. It’s important to remember that these issues are not uncommon and there is no shame in getting help for them. Therapy is confidential, and women can talk about their experiences without fear of judgment. Seeking therapy can be a courageous and liberating act, and an important step toward healing and recovery.
