As a trauma therapist, I believe that getting to know yourself better and having more compassion for yourself, will help you to heal and create the life that you want.
You're a young woman of color who looks like you have it all together but deep down you’re falling apart. You’re tired of trying to keep it together all the time. You’re taking care of everyone else but it feels like no one takes care of you. You might not even remember a time when things didn’t feel this way. But one thing is for sure: you’re ready for some relief. You’re ready to take better care of yourself. You’re ready to stop being so hard on yourself all the time. But most of all, you’re ready to feel at peace with who you are.

When you’re not reliving past trauma, and you’re not constantly anxious about the future, and you’ve let go of toxic coping strategies, then dealing with all of the day-to-day nonsense starts to feel a bit less overwhelming.
I probably don’t need to tell you we’re living in a racist, sexist, heteronormative, capitalist dystopian nightmare in a slow and painful collapse. It’s hard to cope with that knowledge while dealing with day-to-day nonsense, on top of reliving past trauma on a regular basis. It’s a lot and it’s heavy and it sucks. Some people turn to substances and other vices to cope.

I'm Julie, a clinical therapist that specializes in Anxiety, Trauma, Interpersonal Psychotherapy, Grief & Ambiguous Loss. We know that adventures in life can bring challenges that are difficult or feel impossible to navigate. Because of this, we often avoid dealing with the stressors and teach our mind and our body to navigate through the distress, to the best of our ability. After all, things already can be so overwhelming, how can we consider adding one more thing requiring our attention? What if I told you, all you need to do is take the first step. That one step creates forward movement towards an improved sense of functioning!

In addition to 20+ years experience, I have specialized training in depression, anxiety & trauma.
I am not your typical nor traditional therapist! If you're looking for a therapist who is stuffy and uptight, or if you prefer clinical jargon and lots of big words, I am NOT the therapist for you. I’m the therapist who may show up wearing jeans and sandals one week and a long dress the next. I have tattoos and don’t try to hide them. I will call you on your crap when appropriate, and I might even swear while doing so. I support BLM, LGBTQIA+ and I believe in Science. I may not be a "typical" therapist, yet I am me & I am genuine. If you want to become the best YOU possible, give me a call! I know I can help.

Among my areas of expertise are Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), trauma, depression, anxiety, parenting, relational, and marital issues.
We all struggle at times to see our inner strengths and capabilities due to the life experiences which have shaped us. I work in the belief that we each have everything we need to achieve a fulfilled and successful life already present within us; sometimes we just need a little help accessing it. Using a multi-modality approach I encourage my clients to work in the small steps, not the giant leaps, that bring us to self awareness, acceptance, and lasting change.

Trauma and PTSD Therapists
When should I seek treatment for trauma?
Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.
How long does trauma therapy take?
Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.
What happens if trauma is left untreated?
Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.
Can PTSD come back after treatment?
It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
