As a psychoanalytically-oriented clinician who works from a depth perspective, my foremost aim is to develop an open, compassionate, and trusting relationship with you so that you feel free to share with me those issues that most burden you - those issues for which you need careful, caring and respectful attention. I have worked mostly with adults in individual, couples, and group psychotherapy who have struggled with anxiety, depression, panic, trauma (including childhood abuse and neglect), PTSD, and substance use issues. I've worked with and I am sensitive to the needs of people of diverse identities.

Our beliefs and assumptions about the world inform our feelings, which in turn, influences our behavior. Many of those assumptions however are not entirely our own, or even in our conscious awareness. They come from our parents, communities, traumatic experiences, or a less developed version of ourself. Living a life that does not reflect our authentic values often results in inner conflict that negatively spills outward into our intimate, familial, and professional relationships. Taking time to explore what thoughts and values belong to our authentic selves, is one of the most important gifts an individual can give to themselves.

I'm a person who can help you. I'm kind and non-judgemental, fun and curious, and I want to help you understand and live your life better. We can sort out and co-narrate your life as it comes, explore and mend unhelpful patterns, and help you to truly love yourself. Many of us make ourselves small so people don't dislike us, but part of you knows that your needs are important too. With my curiosity and training, our relationship can help you put yourself first and be a better partner and friend.

Whether you are seeking relief for a specific issue, symptom or problem or feeling a longing to improve the quality and meaning of your life and develop your potential, therapy is a path seriously worth exploring. Moreover, our symptoms, depressions, anxieties and fears, our addictions and old habit patterns create a wall in front of us as we strive to move forward. Left solely to our own devices change can evoke high anxiety and include a resurgence of old negative or depressive messages and "what-if?" thinking. We may doubt ourselves, our capacities in learning, work ,communication or love, even play.

As a clinical psychologist, I believe that knowledge, awareness, and insight are the cornerstones of therapy. By helping increase emotional awareness and identifying their related thoughts and behaviors, I facilitate understanding of causes and triggers for anxiety, depression, and interpersonal conflict. An appreciation of each individual's unique background and encounters is crucial in comprehending how one relates to new information and experiences. I tailor empirically supported treatment to address emotional distress, and believe we are all active participants in our health and wellness. With the correct tools and insight, we can lead emotionally healthy, successful, and meaningful lives.

Therapy can work differently for each person. Some begin an in-depth self-exploration; some address their mental health issues and adjust maladaptive patterns; some learn coping strategies for stress, depression, anxiety, low motivation etc. It is also perfectly normal to be unclear about your direction at the moment. I am happy to help you clarify your needs and assist you to thrive in life, work, and relationships. Collaboration, the sense of safety and warmth are highly valued in this process.

Beginning therapy can be scary and is a bold step toward making proactive changes in your life. I provide a warm and relaxed atmosphere to explore your emotional life in a safe and supportive space. Aware of the importance of the body, I experience you as a whole person: your words, life themes, affect, posture, and your presence. By experiencing you in your wholeness, I can contextualize what can feel confusing or fragmentary. I can share what I see and understand, helping you raise your self-awareness. This process can harmonize your thoughts and emotions. Insight alone often is not sufficient for healing.

Life is worth living when we feel authentic and genuine, and engage in meaningful relationships. Sadness, grief, disappointment, hurt, and loss are all-natural human emotions. Feeling chronically anxious, depressed, inadequate, or unlovable are not. These unrelenting feelings come from an injury (or injuries) that hasn’t healed. Regardless of where your emotional injury comes from, you can learn to regulate your reactions, heal these wounds, take care of yourself, and connect to your sense of meaning and purpose. The more you live in alignment with your values and what is meaningful to you, the better you will feel.

As a therapist, I use an interactive, “here and now” approach. I believe that relationships are healing, and that a strong connection and open dialogue between myself and the client is the most effective path toward change.

My approach to therapy is clear, curious, warm, and adaptive to your needs. I utilize a blend of techniques from various therapeutic modalities that are proven effective and backed by research. You can expect our work to flow through two main focal points: practical insights and exercises based on neuroscience and mind-body integration that bring needed relief; and a deeper exploration of lifelong patterns in the subconscious mind to bring lasting change and healing. I am a supportive agent toward self-knowing so my clients can inhabit their lives and relationships from a place of vibrancy and clarity.

Searching through lists of therapists is no one's idea of a good time. Hopefully you have been able to reflect on what is important to you during this stressful and terrifying Covid-19 pandemic. I like to be able to find something positive about a dark time, but I am not relentlessly positive, nor do I think it is healthy for anyone to be constantly content or joyful. Life just doesn't work that way. Let me help you to define or articulate what is painful & discover alternate paths forward. Balance means embracing the positive and enduring the negative and having the self knowledge to know which is which.

Substance Use Therapists

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
