My focus as a therapist is to learn from clients the areas of life - relationships, work, school, substance use - where they feel “stuck” and to work together to strategize ways to become “unstuck”. Setting goals and making progress towards those goals is paramount for clients to feel successful in the therapy process. I like to support clients in finding practical ways to start the change process and to help them maintain their motivation.

I teach coping strategies for managing symptoms of depression, anxiety, mood disorders, grief and loss, substance use, life transitions, relationship and family issues and work-related stress.
Many of us strive to establish and maintain an overall state of peace and good health in our lives. It is difficult to feel grounded with all of the pain, uncertainty and chaos life creates for us. Difficult life events often disrupt our sense of security, control, balance and connectedness and it can feel impossible to find our path again.

I also conduct substance abuse assessments for the purpose of helping individuals and their families determine whether a substance use disorder is present and to decide upon the necessary level of care.
An accomplished practitioner with 30 years of notable credentials and multifaceted expertise, clients of all backgrounds and ages have taught me that our lives are not defined by what happens to us but by how we respond to our circumstances; therapy is about collaboratively finding new and effective responses to life. Utilizing and integrating a variety of approaches, in the context of a caring relationship, I help adolescents and adults cope with: the effects of stress, divorce, loss; relationship & work dissatisfaction; depression, anxiety; alcohol & drug abuse; and family-of-origin dysfunction.

Recent experience includes work with both adolescents and adults, treating issues such as anxiety, depression, trauma, substance use, sexuality, gender, family conflicts, and more.
I hold a master’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Social Policy and Practice in clinical social work. I have practiced as a member of the psychiatry team at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania as a psychotherapist; I have also practiced at drug and alcohol treatment centers, adolescent treatment centers, and acute residential settings. I have found increased success treating teens, adults, and families. I have also founded Harborlight Counseling, where I have built a team of clinicians with expertise in working with these populations to create accessible services for all clients who need help.

Happiness and fulfillment in life is achieved when the relationships with our inner self, our partner, and our family members are harmonious. Harmony is a process, not a result. I strategize with my clients, who are sick of the status quo, to help them identify areas in their individual, marital, and familial lives that can facilitate peaceful resolutions.

As a mom, single parent, and professional, I know how important it is to check-in with ourselves; being able to look at our lives deeply. To understand where our thoughts and beliefs come from, how we can best nurture our emotions and move through life's changes. It's important to remember we are doing the best we can. Yet, sometimes it feels too hard or we feel uncertain how to grow. We are human. We all have challenges, wounds or uncertainties as we go through one life stage to another. Having the right support and resources can help move us toward a path of growth and comfort.

Everyone has a story to tell and sometimes the bravest thing a person can do is share their story. When your story is holding you back from becoming the greatest version of yourself then it’s time to work through any negative messages you may have been telling yourself. I believe we all have the tools we need to accomplish our goals and sometimes we need a different perspective.

My approach to therapy is to help clients trust and utilize their strengths while teaching new skills and strategies to better cope with life's challenges. Healing and growth starts in a trusting, nonjudgmental atmosphere where you feel comfortable enough to explore all the components of yourself and your life. I view therapeutic work as a true partnership, and I aim to help clients move towards increased self-awareness, self-confidence, self-compassion, and self-actualization.

Substance Use Therapists

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
