Modalities I lean into to help drive the therapeutic relationship and process to help promote growth and change include Person Centered, MI, Reality Therapy, psychodynamics, CBT, DBT and EMDR.
Whether you are new to therapy, have found yourself stuck in previous therapy or are somewhere in between, welcome! I work to support and nurture those experiencing anxiety, depression, ADHD challenges, trauma, substance use, stress/burnout, life transitions, relationship issues, self esteem, or a lack of sense of self. Many of us have felt a sense of invalidation in our lives and currently struggle with reaching our goals or becoming our true potential selves. Through my 18 years working in the field, I've developed a style that is balanced between being validating and nurturing along with being direct and challenging.

I use an integrative approach to counseling that includes Solution-Focused, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectica Behavioral Therapy, Reality Therapy, Mindfulness, and Strength-Based approaches to help you manage symptoms, improve or recover, and create resilience to face challenges.
I have clients, not patients, because therapy is not only for those struggling with challenges but for those who want to have a better version of themselves and compromise to do the inner work to reach the goal. I am an immigrant myself and understand how life can change from one moment to another. The key is to learn how to create resilience to cope with challenges and survive. Tengo clientes y no pacientes por que creo que terapia es no solo para quienes tienen una enfermedad mental pero para todos nosotros que queremos tener una mejor calidad de vida y aprender a crear resiliencia para sobrevivir los altibajos que trae la vida.

I believe in Reality therapy.
If you are simply trying to find your way and understand the why behind the way you're feeling or the things that make you afraid or sad, we can walk through that together. Do you want to see a better outlook on life, a stronger sense of self or a better relationship with your family, friends or yourself, we can create some goals ...together.

I have an eclectic theoretical approach combining Existential, Constructive, and Reality Therapy (with the sprinkle of various other evidence-based modalities).
I operate on the belief that self-awareness, questioning our reality, and choosing to create change in our lives, together, are the keys to living vs. surviving. At the risk of sounding very cheesy, you deserve to feel ALIVE and live a life worth living-whatever that looks like for you. Something brought you here and one of the only things I can confidently predict is that change is constant, inevitable, and really uncomfortable. But, we can play a huge role in guiding that change for ourselves. And you don’t have to navigate that alone.

'We do what we want' is a primary premise in the approach Karen takes to counseling, and a clear reflection and understanding of what that means to each client, is where she will begin. Karen's counseling style is based in Reality Therapy; our choices are powerful. She will help her clients to take stock of where he or she is, where they truly desire to be, and help search her client's soul to determine what he or she is willing to do to achieve success as they define it.

Seeking therapy can be a daunting task, and as a counselor, I want to make this process as smooth and accessible as I can. I enjoy building rapport with my clients and watching them grow and flourish. The relationship between counselor and client often is a predictor for successful outcomes. Therefore, I work hard to offer a safe, non-judgmental environment to discuss life transitions and difficulties.

Life can be meaningful and exciting, but circumstances and choices often cause problems that seem so complex there appears no way out. Though most people know deep down what they need, it sometimes takes another person to help them figure out what steps to take.

All change involves loss. All loss involves change. Even those changes we choose, can be challenging and maybe painful. Yet in nearly all situations, we have the power to choose how we respond. “Every choice we make takes us closer to or further from where we want to be.” Whether the choice has to do with some exciting possibility or tragedy and trauma from illness, death, assault or a failing relationship, it’s all about our choices. Helping people decide where they want to be, and evaluating whether their choices take them closer to or further from that destination, is what my practice is about.

Reality Therapy

Is reality therapy evidence-based?

Reality therapy is not well-studied, and it may not be as effective in treating certain mental health conditions when compared with evidence-based treatments like cognitive behavioral or acceptance and commitment therapies. However, some research does indicate that reality therapy might be helpful for people with addiction, and may be effective in treating social anxiety in young people.

How long does reality therapy last?

Reality therapy is less structured when compared with psychoanalysis, for example. Reality therapy is more open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to two times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. Individuals can also practice the principles of reality therapy long after treatment has ended.

Does reality therapy work?

Reality therapy can help a person manage concerns such as eating disorders, addiction, substance use, anxiety, phobias, and relationship difficulties. This type of therapy encourages a person to be accountable for their behaviors. This therapy may offer benefits that are hard to measure. Reality therapy can be useful in one-on-one therapy or in group sessions. This method may be used with children, families, and adults.

What are the limitations of reality therapy?

This therapy is person-centered or client-centered, and the therapist focuses on choices made by the individual in the present day. The therapist privileges the individual’s perspective over others. This format may feel frustrating for individuals seeking a more structured approach; certainly, no one therapy type will work for every client.
