I strive to provide a reflective atmosphere to help individuals authentically engage deeper aspects of themselves. You might be feeling uncertain, worried, or hopeless as you navigate difficult life transitions or the complexities of relationships-perhaps ending or beginning an academic program, vocation, or intimate partnership. You might be processing the loss of a loved one, finding it difficult to connect with your partner, or struggling to find more meaning in your life. Changes like these often turn our world upside down. I will support you in reuniting with your inner self and feeling confident in the steps you take ahead.

I use a therapeutic process that is collaborative, nonjudgmental, and solutions oriented in order to build the additional resiliency you need to better manage your emotions, challenging circumstances, and life's curve balls, including chronic illness.
Are you challenged with maintaining perspective during heated situations with colleagues, family, and friends? Does it negatively affect your work performance or personal relationships?  The pressure of building or maintaining a successful professional career while trying to stay healthy and juggling the demands of a personal life, can leave us feeling stressed, depressed, and even burned out.

In addition to my work with addictions, I have had many years of experience (both as a researcher and clinician) working with depression of all types, anxiety disorders, chronic and acute pain conditions, trauma, issues around aging, and bereavement.
I focus a great deal on helping people expand their awareness of aspects of themselves and their important relationships that they have difficulty paying attention to and feeling. This increased awareness helps people feel more flexible and free to navigate the obstacles and cross-currents they find facing them in their lives, rather than remain stuck in repetitive cycles of suffering.

Your life has become exhausting. You have so much to do and your efforts never feel like they are enough. You would like to take time to slow down and focus on yourself for a change, but when will that realistically happen? There will always be something else to get done and you can’t seem to catch a break. Maybe your pain is taking the driver's seat, unsure of when your next flare up will strike. Maybe you've made your world smaller in hopes of having more control, but things continue to feel not quite right. You feel stuck in this place for what feels like an eternity and feeling uncertain about the future has become your jam.

I believe that the ability to calm down and solve problems are two of the most crucial skills for success in life! Over the past thirty plus years I have had the honor of having many people from many different backgrounds share their stories of life's victories, challenges, and pain with me. Most individuals have both obvious and hidden strengths that can be called up to help them to move past obstacles. I feel skilled about being able to create the emotional safety for people to truly discover and tap in to their own resources. As clients then learn and become empowered with strong, coping skills, exciting postive changes happen!

When we experience feelings that are difficult to tolerate, or impact our ability to move through our lives, we call them by names like depression, anxiety, chronic pain, addiction, etc.
How does the "talking cure" help? It might have even been called the "listening cure." Having a helpful and supportive ear is something many people find they need at various transition points in their lives. Having a safe place to talk, in a warm and supportive environment, is crucial. The tool of our work is the relationship and, as research has shown, is the most important predictor of success in psychotherapy. I enjoy working with my patients as they seek to find their way to a richer and more fulfilling life.

Chronic Pain Therapists

How does chronic pain therapy work?

Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?

Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophizing, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?

Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
